GPWW 5/24/13 Worldwide Family Mixtape: Hiatus Kaiyote

This past week’s edition of the Worldwide Show with Gilles Peterson starts off with a sultry, brass interpretation of Kendrick Lamar‘s “B*tch Don’t Kill My Vibe” from Austinfa jazz producer Sly5thAve. The eclectic grooves continue with a Ras G triplet, Ghostface Killah double, and a hip-hop throwback in “The Do Over” section with Public Enemy.

Gilles also presents a mixtape from global soul quartet, Hiatus Kaiyote, featuring tunes from fellow Aussies Ainslie Willis, Clever Austin, Electric Sea Spider, and more. Hiatus have been riding a wave of success recently that has included acclaim from icons such as Erykah Badu and ?uestlove, as well as a sold-out NYC debut at Le Poisson Rouge in March.

Archives: Nickodemus – ‘Giant Step Mixtape, Vol. 2′ (1997) + MP3

It’s always nice to stumble across something from the archives around these parts. Our pal Nickodemus recently converted this 1997 Giant Step mixtape cassette to digital and made it a free download. And above is a flyer from one of our hotel parties with Nickodemus in 1996!

Here’s what he had to say about the mix:

After almost 2 years DJ’ing at Giant Step parties, we were moving & grooving in all directions. Drum & Bass, Trip Hop, Hip Hop, House, Abstract beats were all flowing in & out of the latin, funk, jazz & breaks. At the time, Maurice & Jonathan (Giant Step) handed me the 4 or 5 pack vinyl white labels of the long awaited Nuyorican Soul album. Ninja Tune, MoWax, Pussyfoot, Creative Source, Pork & many more were turning out some bugged out new sounds. Stateside, Hip Hop was bubbling on the underground as indie labels were popping up all over the place. We waited every week for new shipments of vinyl! Here’s my usual cosmic mix of Sun, Moon, Earth, Space… Stay tuned for NEW MIXES… coming soon!! Spring brings fresh new flowers!!! #MixTapeDiaries

Valentine’s Day Gifts of Love from Hudson Mohawke and Sam Tiba

vday

V-day like Halloween tends to inspire a flurry of themed mixtapes and other goodies. Of particular interest today are Hudmo‘s Slow Jams Chapter VI for LuckyMe and Sam Tiba‘s Valentine’s mix for Pelican Fly.

The sixth edition of the gunshot-fire scorched mix series from Glasgow’s Hudson Mohawke (who signed to Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music as a producer a month ago) is as glorious and emotion-drenched as his previous installments. No tracklist is provided, but we doubt that’s what’s on your mind while you’re knockin boots to this.

Club Cheval member Sam Tiba’s Valentine’s present is a collage of endless and effortless blends, twisting up old favorites with some newer tracks from BenZel, Jeremih, and Kendrick Lamar. Needless to say it has us swooning and wishing we could hold onto this feeling forever.
