Last Night’s Journey Party Benefits Kon

gse_multipart557361Last night, Giant Step’s weekly party with DJ Spinna at Santos, Journey, was more than just a fantastic party with special guest DJs Rich Medina, Eli Escobar, Cosmo, Scratch and Amir on the decks.  It was a benefit for the great NY DJ and record digger, Kon, whose health has recently been bombarded with blood clots, on top of myriad more serious maladies requiring surgery.

A big thank you to everyone who came through to help Kon out.  Together, we raised $3,500 for him.  If you would like to make a separate donation, please paypal money to DJMSTHANG@GMAIL.COM.

From all of us at Giant Step: keep fighting Kon!

Finally, here are a few of Kon’s mixes for you to enjoy:

HARD NYC: Crookers, Major Lazer, Rusko, Jack Beats & Destructo

hardnyc1The Bowery Presents HARD NYC: Crookers, Major Lazer, Rusko, Jack Beats & Destructo at Terminal 5, October 10th.

Crookers are DJ Phra and Bot, two Italian DJ’s/producers who met in 2003. Drawing from influences of house, hip hop and beyond, Crookers blend their beats with fidget house finesse. Crookers have sleazed out dance floors with a catalogue of original tracks that startle and surprise, but it’s their work as remixers that have made them one of the most sought out in the business. The duo has reworked tracks for the likes of Kid Cudi, The Chemical Brothers, Armand Van Helden, Bonde do Role, Brodinski and Chromeo. The result is a twisted blend of glitch, tech and distortion.

Major Lazer are uber-producers Diplo and Switch, who are out to subdue the forces of evil with a batch of futuristic dancehall bangers. Recorded at Tuff Gong Studios in Jamaica, the product of this collaboration, Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do (out now on Downtown Records), runs global pop culture through the filter of Major Lazer’s particular brand of 80′s-inspired digital dancehall – at once an homage to a bygone era and a look to the future of dance music.

J. Period and K’NAAN – Part 1 of The Messengers

J.Period & K’NAAN are pleased to present the first installment of The Messengers, a tribute to Fela Kuti, Bob Marley & Bob Dylan. Episode #1 pays tribute to Fela, Nigeria’s eminent musical activist and arguably the most influential artist to emerge from Africa this century. Fela grew to international fame with his revolutionary, political views and an innovative style of music called “Afrobeat,” a genre he invented, combining soul, funk and African rhythms. Join J.Period & Somali-born MC K’NAAN as they pay tribute to Fela by remixing and reinventing his classic work on part 1 of The Messengers.

Guest MC’s include: Zumbi (Zion I) & Bajah (Dry Eye Crew) from Sierra Leone.

The Messengers: Fela Kuti, Bob Marley & Bob Dylan

cc-thumbJ Period and K’NAAN collaborate to form The Messengers mixtape.  The Messengers is a project dedicated to three different music legends: Fela Kuti, Nigeria’s eminent musical activist; Bob Marley, Jamaica’s emissary of struggle and unity; and Bob Dylan, America’s reluctant Civil Rights song leader.

Weaving afro-beat, reggae, ska, folk music and rock into this genre-bending musical experience, The Messengers stretches the boundaries of hip hop—and the mixtape genre itself. Remixing the classic work of Fela, Marley and Dylan, The Messengers captures the timelessness of their sounds and the continued urgency of their messages.

J.Period & K’NAAN will pay tribute to each of “The Messengers” individually with a new release every Tuesday in September:

Fela Kuti (September 1)

Bob Marley (September 8 )

Bob Dylan (September 15)

The Messengers in its entirety (including additional bonus tracks and artwork) on September 22.
