Daptone Records’ Budos III

Our friends at Daptone Records have a new release out this week: the third album from Budos Band, titled Budos Band III. Produced by Bosco Mann and TNT at “House of Soul Studios” in Bushwick, Brooklyn, the band’s third full-length studio effort was conceived during weekly, beer-fueled Staten Island writing sessions – as well as more than 150 live gigs over the last two years – and recorded during a 48 hour period in January 2010.

If the menacing album art, which features a cobra primed for the attack, is any indication of the music itself, we can expect an all out assault of the senses, with a tendency towards the venomous and psychedelic.

Check out a significantly less controversial new video from M.I.A.,  at least compared to the gruesome “Born Free” video. Our girl Maya has traveled a long, bumpy road to the release of her album /\/\/\Y/\ , but she’s still going strong and sticking with the GIF animation theme in her “XXXO” video. If you haven’t already, check out the “XXXO” remixes featuring Jay-Z and more remixes by Riton and SBTRKT.

“Little Fly” is a quiet and melodic piece from the upcoming album Chamber Music Society, in which Esperanza Spalding sets the William Blake poem to original music. Throughout the piece, Esperanza’s vocals merge seamlessly with her own bass as well as the string trio that surrounds it.

Eli “Paperboy” Reed Releases Come and Get It

On his Capitol Records debut, Come and Get It!, Eli “Paperboy” Reed proves to be the life of a soulful, sweaty party where everyone eventually gets dragged onto the dance floor. He incorporates the feel of classic R&B and soul into a largely self-penned album produced with Mike Elizondo. As a performer, Reed approaches each song with nothing less than utter conviction; he’s as authentically gritty as he is ingratiatingly sexy. Admirers have likened Reed to such luminaries as Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett, but Reed is channeling his influences and inspirations into making something all his own.
