GPWW 7/5/10: Words and Music from Aloe Blacc

Tune in to Gilles Peterson Worldwide this week for an exciting preview of eight songs off of soul singer Aloe Blacc’s upcoming album, including his hit song, “I Need a Dollar,” his Spanish version of John Legend’s “Ordinary People,” and Aloe’s personal favorite track, “Momma Hold My Hand.” Blacc also discusses his starting days in underground hip-hop group, Emanon, and his Latin, soul, folk, and jazz influences. As usual, Gilles also provides you with an eclectic mix of music from all over the world, including songs by Sébastien Tellier, Gil Scott-Heron, and Flying Lotus.

Step into the Swelly Life: a series of short webisodes that follow Chiddy Bang on their journey through the music industry. From sold-out shows around the world to getting shouted at by their parents, these webisodes are about the ups & downs of being a new band on the rise whilst still dealing with real life, family responsibilities and getting through college. The full-length will be available in August; until then you can get the EP, Opposite of Adults, here.

Chiddy Bang is also extending their US Swelly Life Tour (with Donnis, XV, and Bad Rabbits) through August, so check tour dates on their Myspace.

If you haven’t heard Cosmogramma by FlyLo yet, you’re missing out. But listen here, and you can still download the interactive ‘Fieldlines’ application to play around with your webcam while you float into the cosmos.

New Album by Morcheeba: Blood Like Lemonade

The new album from trip-hop trio Morcheeba, Blood Like Lemonade, marks the reunion with the group’s longtime vocalist Skye Edwards. It’s available in physical and digital today, and while you’re at it, download the remix of “Even Though” by Belgian production duo Surfing Leons here.

New Album by M.I.A.: /\/\ /\ Y /\

M.I.A.’s hotly anticipated third full-length /\/\ /\ Y /\ has finally arrived, following the internationally critically acclaimed Arular (2005) and Kala (2007). Like its predecessors, /\/\ /\ Y /\ deftly mixes politics, social consciousness, and inimitable genre blending. As much a political statement as a musical one, the new album takes a scathing look at our ever-increasing dependence on the digital world. Producers on the album include Rusko, Blaqstarr, Switch, Diplo, John Hill, Derek Miller, Sugu, and Maya herself. You can check her out live on July 24th at Hard Fest in NYC on South Island Field, Governor’s Island.
