GPWW 8/31/11: Bassfort Worldwide Family Mixtape

Diving right into this latest episode of the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Show, Gilles opens up with nothing but mellow grooves a la Weldon Irvine, King of Nostalgia, and a track called “Is This Love?” from Thundercat‘s recently released The Golden Age of Apocalypse. If you know Gilles then you know it’s only a matter of time before things speed up, and this comes in the form of a mix from Spanish ensemble Bassfort, composed of Wagon Cookin’ and Nacho.

GPWW 8/17/11: Jazz Special, Words & Music with Austin Peralta + The Pyramids

This edition of the Worldwide show is an extra special one for genuine music lovers. It’s all about the “roots of music” as Gilles himself states, and it’s dedicated entirely to Jazz. The mix starts with a cut from the master himself, John Coltrane. Some other classic Jazz artists featured are Abbey Lincoln, Lee Morgan, and Wayne Shorter, among others. If this wasn’t enough, we are treated to other genres of music that were successful in blending Jazz elements to create something truly unique, the shining examples of this are some selections from Tribe Called Quest‘s heyday, and the house-jazz mashup “Hot Music” that still rings off in nightclubs to this day. Rounding things off, Gilles brings into his studio two guests currently touring around Europe, pianist/composer Austin Peralta, and Idris Ackamoor from The Pyramids.

For those of you in NYC, catch Gilles Peterson playing an exclusive DJ set at Cielo tonight!
