Next Step July Winner: Sean Haefeli

Hella excited about this July Next Step winner of ours! Berlin based pianist, vocalist, lyricist, and composer Sean Haefeli mesmerized us with his vocal jazz that’s sprinkled with welcome notes of Jose James and Gil Scott-Heron.

Others have referenced Last Poets, Roberta Flack, Michael Franti, Bobby McFerrin, and Gregory Porter when speaking about his music. Looks like dude has a pretty fail proof thing going on as far as many are concerned.

Sean’s sound blends jazz, soul, hip hop, and spoken word to birth warm, honest, and intimate music perfect for cozying up to as winter approaches. RISE marks his third album, which similar to his previous two, is self-produced and released. Below, you can stream the entire album and also download the title track for free!

Touring will begin in late October through November of this year. On, November 16 catch a special performance on Mijke’s Middag Live on Dutch radio station Radio 6.

Video: Sky Ferreira – “Everything is Embarrassing”

Sky Ferreira got her a little vintage Madonna steez going on. In this video for “Everything is Embarrassing,” she flails about like the natural carefree pop star rocker she seems destined to be. That early 90s pop zest on this tune is exactly what we needed to make this sunny Friday seem all the more perfect.

Pitchfork even gave it the honor of Best New Track when it first came out – not too shabby. And she’s quite easy on the eyes with that carefully crafted “messy” hair, too, huh? Winning all around.

The track is part of her upcoming EP, Ghost, where Sky calls on an impressive cast of producers, including Greg Kurstin (Santigold, The Shins), Jon Brion (Fiona Apple), and Ariel Rechtshaid (Usher).

Look out for Ghost on October 16.

Video: DJ Nu-Mark – “Tropicalifornia” ft. Quantic

[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/lGIT2uZV_JA" width="550" height="445" allowfullscreen="true" fvars="fs=1" /]

Jump around! This blazing new track by DJ Nu-Mark features producer extraordinaire Quantic and goes by the name of “Tropicalifornia.” The vibe is sorta self explanatory – the hum of an accordion mixed in with some scratching make for a welcome medley of sounds. The video, similarly, is full of life and shows the two artists playing their hearts out on a slew of instruments. Too much fun – can we have summer back?

The track is taken from Nu-Mark’s upcoming album, Broken Sunlight.

New Track: Zodiac – “Come” ft. Jesse Boykins III

For those unaware, The Weeknd used to be a duo, including a producer named Jeremy Rose (aka Zodiac). After being unceremoniously removed from the group, he’s carried on with solo work and has recently released a project called the Zodiac EP. Below is “Come” from that project featuring the dreamy crooner Jesse Boykins III. The work is the product of a $300 laptop. True indeed that artistry need not rely on fancy tools, but simply talent!
