New Track: Gary Clark Jr. – “Numb”

This guy is so damn cool. First time we saw him was at SXSW 2012 when he buzzed about with his eleventy-billion showcases, murderating stage after stage. Hailed by the press as the second coming of Jimi Hendrix after wowing crowds for the last couple years going hard on the festival circuit, Gary Clark Jr. is that dude.

The newest single from his upcoming album, Blak and Blu, comes in the form of a distorted, gritty wonderland called “Numb” and carries a vocal style reminding us a bit of Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys fame. No going wrong with that, either.

The first single, “Ain’t Messin ‘Round,” was released in September and has a crispier, poppier, high energy vibe. The man boasts variety – go ‘head, boo.

Look for Blak and Blu on October 22, and in the meantime take a peek at Gary’s fashion spread in the August/September issue of Vibe, which happens to be shot by our editor, Seher Sikandar. Pretty rad!

An introspective Jack Davey and her guitar let us into Jack’s bedroom with the latest video from her L0-F! (Side A) project. “Eye Can See” tells the story of a reflecting on a life path and recognizing the close of a chapter through hazy, jittery black and white images. Though a simple and short track, the way she sings always seems to hit somewhere deep.

Our upcoming Monday night with the legendary King Britt is just around the corner. As King prepares for what sure to be an all night booty rocking affair, we catch up with the man himself about what’s been moving him of late.

More details on the party after the jump.

Giant Step: What’s your typical day been looking like of late? we know you’re always doing interesting things.

King Britt: Well, I try my best to be pretty organized. I’m lucky to be home through the week Mon-Thurs to work in the studio. I just recently did a remix for Cat Power, Arc in Round and Manuel Tur. Then weekends I fly out to do gigs or check my daughter on campus.

GS: When we checked in with you earlier, you mentioned that you’ve been working “on a number of very interesting projects at the moment.” We’d love to hear more about them!

KB: Yes, as I mentioned, just did some remixes. Recently, completed a few commissions, one an album for the DataGarden label, which is part sound design part experimental music, out now on their label. Two, I just completed a ‘sound art’ commission for Bowerbird as part of Design Philadelphia, which is a sonic interpretation of Jim Sanborn’s Ars Menendi sculpture.

Video: Gizmo – “Love Song #3″ (Meshell Ndegeocello Cover)

We met bassist and singer Gizmo last year at HarlemStage when he was part of the Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Ensemble shredding it up. To our surprise, we recently also found that homeboy is also a singer – and a pretty good one, at that. The 21-year old does a marvelous job above at covering Meshell Ndegeocello’s “Love Song #3.” Quite rad to see a dude singing her parts – it works well. Big kudos to Gizmo.

Gizmo also recently released his Derrick Hodge (Robert Glasper Experiment) produced debut album, Red Balloon, which features a gang of dope artists including Casey Benjamin (Robert Glasper Experiment / Q-Tip), Jamire Williams, Anna Wise of Sonnymoon, amongst several others.

Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Anthony David has just released the first single from his upcoming album, Love Out Loud. This video for “Sweet Pain” shows our young fella irking his restaurant coworker arch nemesis somehow into sneaking behind frosted doors and into employee only rooms for a little harmless lovin’. Oh, the charmers. How can you resist David’s raspy croon, though?
