Spread Love, Jump'n'Funk, & Hot Ice present Felabration! w/ Roy Ayers, Rich Medi
Saturday, October 24
595 North, Atlanta GA
Spread Love, Jump'n'Funk and Hot Ice pay homage to the life of Nigeria's warrior poet and the Godfather of Global Soul with Felabration!
Felabration! takes its audience through an interactive journey of the life of Africa's most prolific musical pioneer: first, with a documentary, "Music is the Weapon," live art, traditional African body/pace painting, highlights of the FELA! Broadway Musical, and a special performance by one of Fela's collaborative partners, Roy Ayers!
Leading the evening's tribute are DJ Kemit, minister of sound for Spread Love, and Rich Medina, the global ambassador of Jump'n'Funk. DJ Ausar, host of WRFG's Kalakuta Show, will open the night with a musical libation befitting a king. Then Mausiki Scales & Common Ground Collective will provide the live musical foundation for Roy Ayers and his magical vibes.
DJ Kemit and Rich Medina will close the night with a record-for-record mash up of Afrobeat, Soul, Funk and House - reminiscent Fela's legendary collaborations with James Brown, Roy Ayers, and Ginger Baker, just to name a few.
And this just in...
Atlanta-based and Brooklyn-born artist, Fahamu Pecou, is exhibiting some new work as part of the Felabration. He'll be working on an 8-foot canvas inspired by Fela's music, live at the event. His new work, "Whirl Trade" is a suite of neopop paintings which address the impressions, interpretations and misconceptions of blackness that African descended communities perform for each other.
Referencing the photos of West African photographer, Malick Sidibe, he created a series of black and white images which are interpreted as faux magazine covers. "Whirl Trade" is the mash-up of black bodies influencing and being influenced by one another through popular media and entertainment. For more info check: http://www.fahamupecouart.com
About Spread Love
Hosted by DJ Kemit, Spread Love is Atlanta's monthly art/dance retrospective - featuring the best in Broken, Afrobeat, Afro-Latin, Soul Classics and Deep House. The music of Grammy Award-nominated producer DJ Kemit has taken him around the world and back. Each year, Kemit dedicates the October installation of Spread Love to one of his musical fathers, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. From traditional African rhythms and new music of this millenium, Kemit constructs a musical terrain in response to Fela's call to action and enduring spirit.
For nearly a decade, Jump'n'Funk has been a staple on dancefloors from New York to Berlin, establishing itself as the first and most consistent DJ-based party dedicated to Fela Kuti and his message of peace and equality through music. It has had many homes from its early days at the Shrine in NYC to The Barbican Museum in London, but without fail, Jump'n'Funk has always packed clubs in with dancers and Afrobeat junkies of all stripes, Rich Medina controls the room with epic 4-hour DJ sets and capitvating visuals behind him, only resting to allow live Afrobeat ensembles like Antibalas or Chico Mann take the stage with a flurry of blaring horns and hard-driving percussion that raise the volume and send the dancefloor into a frenzy. From its inception, Jump'n'Funk was designed to raise awareness of Fela Kuti and his legacy, but has since become a nightlife institution, honoring not only his incredible contribution to music, but also the causes he championed: Pan-Africanism, Black empowerment and speaking up on behalf of the fundamentally downtrodden. Armed with an unparalled love of Fela and an unrivaled collection of Afrobeat records, Rich Medina has brought Jump'n'Funk to cities around the world with one purpose: to spread the love of Fela and Afro-Life! Medina infuses Jump'n'Funk with new explosively soulful visuals provided by production futurist Mark of The Marksmen.
In support of the Knitting Factory Records re-launch of Fela Kuti's music catalogue, Giant Step has organized official Felabration events in more than 15 cities across North America throughout the month of October; this outstanding schedule of Felabrations will bring together some of the best DJs, musicians, and promoters around to celebrate the life, music, and birthday of Fela Kuti. These events will unite the diverse communities and Tastemakers across the country that are instrumental in keeping Fela's music alive. Check out the full lineup of events here.
