Giant Step Presents The 6th Annual MLK Tribute w/ DJ Spinna and DJ Rich Medina
It's our sixth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration. Over the years, we've had the honor of having world renowned DJs such as Alex from Jazzanova, Norman Jay, M.B.E., and Nickodemus take us on a musical journey, celebrating freedom and music.
This year is no different, but extra special, as we have DJ Spinna and Rich Medina collaborating on a very special set. Expect to hear six hours of the very, very best in dance music, from soul, funk, Afrobeat and Latin to house, jazz and just about everything else that gets you sweating on the dance floor.
A cornerstone of Hip-Hop's late 90's indie-uprise, DJ Spinna made much of his first impression on listeners as the musical background of his group The Jigmastas (having released an impressive slew of 12" singles on his then self-run label Beyond Real during this time) as well as providing the canvas for an array of that era's lyrical giants. As an emcee in New York City, if you didn't have a Spinna production under your belt, well, you just hadn't accomplished all there was to accomplish. Everyone from Mos Def & Talib Kweli to Pharaohe Monch boasted Spinna beats to prove their worth to the scene.
An accomplished producer, DJ and poet on the worldwide underground music scene, Philadelphia's Rich Medina connects the dots between hip hop, jazz, house, spoken word, Afrobeat and bass heavy future soul. Holding down multiple residencies, past and present, such as Little Ricky's Rib Shack at APT, Jump'n'Funk at S.O.B.'s, and Just For Kicks at Triple Crown, "Big Rich" has garnered worldwide acclaim through his trademark DJ stylings.
Come and join us to celebrate the man and the holiday that makes us proud to live in America.
Giant Step is contributing a portion of the proceeds from this event to Doctors Without Borders, an organization dedicating emergency medical response to Haiti.
