42BELOW Presents New Zealand At CMJ 2010
Tuesday, October 19
(Le) Poisson Rouge, New York NY
The New Zealand showcase at CMJ began in 2007 and was immediately dubbed as "one of the hottest tickets at CMJ" by UK music bible NME. Now, 3 years later, Giant Step, 42Below, NZ On Air, and NZ Music Commission are joining forces to present you with the hottest breakthrough artists from the country that first sees the rising sun.
Showcasing Zowie, Street Chant, Kids Of 88, Electric Wire Hustle, Ruby Frost and Lawrence Arabia, this year's event will take place on Tuesday, October 19th, at Le Poisson Rouge. Doors open at 5:45pm and show starts at 6:00pm sharp.
Entrance is free but strictly RSVP, or with a CMJ badge. RSVPs are valid for one person per unique email and admittance is granted on a first come, first served basis.
About The Artists
ZOWIE - Coming on like a teenage Joan Jett with a drum machine, all Pulp Fiction bangs and kaleidoscopic baton swinging, Zowie is a whip-smart 22 year old karate-proficient Kiwi with a penchant for percussion. Described by one music critic as "a tiny dynamo of electrifying, positive energy" Zowie has distilled a bubbling mix of vintage synth-pop, shimmering electro, playground chants and rock n roll swagger to create a moxy-fuelled sound all of her own.

KIDS OF 88 - Kids Of 88 are Sam McCarthy and Jordan Arts. McCarthy rules vocals, programming and "complaining too much". While partner-in-heartbreaking Arts, plays synths, programming and "not complaining enough". The twosome describe their music as a "whimful combination of dirt spitting kicks and feathering grit. An overdose of nightlife; the lubricated moan of spilt vodka. The hard realization of concrete and the happiness of blurry vision. An alleyway gangbang between Grandmaster Flash and The Knack."

STREET CHANT - Street Chant won the coveted Critic's Choice Award at this year's New Zealand Music Awards. Not bad for a band who've only recently released their debut LP Means. And what exactly are the critics saying? Esteemed NZ music journo Grant Smithies put it best: "Means displays a refreshing absence of the usual tiresome indie-pop pussyfooting. 'Blister' and 'Yr Philosophy' are such perfectly-judged collisions of mania and melody, you could be listening to the Buzzcocks, but fast and loud are not this band's only setting; "Stoned Again" slows down and stretches out into an unusually insightful song about young people taking drugs to escape suburban boredom. Elsewhere the warm waves of guitar distortion recall Dinosaur Jnr., The Pixies and Sonic Youth, but the band's free noise enthusiasms are marshalled by a strong pop sensibility throughout."Street Chant has toured with their spiritual antecedents The 3Ds, were hand-picked to play around Australia with The Dead Weather and make their US debut at CMJ 2010.

LAWRENCE ARABIA - Lawrence Arabia is the pseudonym of James Milne, born 1981 in Christchurch, New Zealand. James has already established a rich musical resume as a former member of The Brunettes, The Ruby Suns and one time touring member of Okkervil River. Album "Chant Darling" is in large part hewn from James' gradual relocation to London. Recorded over 18 months in a studio in Stockholm, three flats in London, a garden shed in Port Chalmers, a car club in Wellington and a studio in Auckland, "Chant Darling" is a modern pop masterpiece. Truly, resistance is futile. The 10 songs provide a wonderful example of classic song-writing combining sugar hits of harmony, sweet melody and lush orchestration that will set you reeling as the witty and sometimes forlorn tales of indolence, longing and romantic misadventure hit home. Chant Darling is out now on Bella Union.

RUBY FROST - From the sequins she adores to her heart quenching tunes, pop songstress Ruby Frost is a sublime talent who looks to the likes of Björk and Kate Bush for inspiration. The petite singer has always written. Poetry, short stories, anything - since her early teens. Now 23, armed with a guitar and a penchant for programming her own beats, she uses lyrics to express her winsome yet wizened take on the world. Alternatively, as she puts it: "writing is where I untangle the mess in my mind." Renowned producer Chris Zane (Passion Pit, The Walkmen, Mumford & Sons) has signed on to produce Frost's debut album, due for release in 2011.

ELECTRIC WIRE HUSTLE - Developing their own twist on modern hip hop, psychedelic and soul Electric Wire Hustle challenges genre boundaries and preconceptions. Signed to the brilliant European tastemaker label BBE, Electric Wire Hustle's unique 'future soul' is attracting serious attention the world over.
