An Evening with José James, plus TK Wonder & Ben Perowsky's MSO, and DJ GE-OLOG
Giant Step is proud to present An Evening with José James, plus TK Wonder & Ben Perowsky's MSO, and DJ GE-OLOGY on Friday, December 3rd, at Littlefield in Brooklyn, NY. One of our favorite jazz crooners since our Brownswood Session days, José James' versatile delivery treads a fine line between hip-hop swagger and a classic jazz sensibility, that is both disciplined and organic.
Advance ticket sales are now over. Tickets will be available at the door starting at 8 p.m.
José James has been dubbed by some as the "jazz voice of a generation". With his smooth baritone voice, his deeply rooted knowledge of Jazz mixed with an R&B flare, José is re-educating people on what it means to love Jazz.
His latest album For All We Know (Impulse!) of Jazz standards arranged for piano and voice only was a pure throw back to his roots. It was released on the heels of critically acclaimed sophomore album Blackmagic, banishing any doubts about this man's capabilities and technique. Read what Time Out New York had to say about him.
TK Wonder's songwriting style uniquely fuses her skills as a slam poet with a significant electro punch. Performing both nationally and internationally she has opened for the likes of Nas, Erykah Badu, Duffy, Talib Kewli and J*Davey. Besides her own band, TK WonderLand, she performs with Moodswing Orchestra consisting of critically acclaimed composer/drummer Ben Perowsky and grammy award winning producer/ guitarist Danny Blume as well as various musicians and vocalists.
She has been featured in magazines such as Giant, Trace, the Japanese publication Luire, and the Washington Post as well as mentions in the Village Voice, Time Out - New York and Jazz Times for her work with Ben Perowsky's Moodswing Orchestra.
One of the most accomplished drummers of his generation, Ben Perowsky's notable career has placed him among a small vanguard of players able to move between jazz, experimental music and cutting edge pop and rock. Ben began his early performing life with jazz legends Dizzy Gilespie, James Moody, pop songstress Rickie Lee Jones and R&B star Roy Ayers. He went on to tour and record with Miles Davis' collaborators The Gil Evans Orchestra, Bob Berg, Mike Stern and later John Scofield.
Amidst his busy sideman/recording career, Ben created and co-led the band Lost Tribe who released three critically acclaimed records released in 1992, 1994 and 1998. He released Ben Perowsky Trio in 1999 from which the title Segment was used in the Will Farrel movie "Talegega Nights". In 2003 he released Camp Songs for John Zorn's Tzadik label, which was voted in Jazztimes Top 50 CDs of 2003. In 2006 Ben created his own label, El Destructo Records with two releases to date: El Destructo: Volume I, a blending of dark ambient dub improv and then released through Sony/Red distribution September, 2009 Moodswing Orchestra which expands on this idea, adding 4 more instrumentalists and 5 well-known vocalists. The current line up of his Moodswing Orchestra includes special guests TK Wonder (vocalist extraordinaire) and Danny Blume (grammy award winning producer/guitarist).
