Handpicking his DJ dates after a nine-month break from clubland, Buzzin' Fly boss and ex-Everything But The Girl writer-producer Ben Watt returns to Cielo in New York for a special one-night-stand on Thursday, January 20th, with special guests Sleepy & Boo (Basic NYC).
"I was pretty burnt out after a seriously hectic 2009, so I swerved the clubs for a few months," says Ben, "but the Buzzin' Fly Winter Party in London in early December was a great way to return. Packed, sweaty and rocking. It was a stunning night and I am raring to go again."
The break was partly essential. Ben spent much of 2010 masterminding the release of his partner Tracey Thorn's recent solo album Love And Its Opposite which came out worldwide through Strange Feeling - the sister imprint to his dance label, Buzzin' Fly. It was licensed to Merge Records in North America.
Buzzin' Fly itself kicks off 2011 with a return to deep Chicago roots.
"The warm, rootsy house sound, and vocals came back in a big way in 2010," says Ben. "One of its chief protagonists has been Chicago's Tevo Howard. We release a new single from him on Buzzin' Fly in January. It's great to see that sound rocking the European dancefloors again. I am also very excited by Montreal's Flowers and Sea Creatures. We'll put out their debut album in the Spring - very emotional and cinematic."
Expect an extended set of upcoming Buzzin' Fly gems, deep electronic house and off-ramp classics.
From their NYC home base, Sleepy & Boo have become preeminent players in the Big Apple's dynamic underground music scene. For the last six years, they've been the resident DJs and driving force behind Basic NYC – named New York's "Best Dance Party 2009" by New York Magazine – an international destination for clubbers eager to catch world-class DJs (everyone from Kaskade to Jeff Mills have been guests over the years) in an intimate, down-and-dirty space.
