It's hard to believe it's been a year since Gilles Peterson found a moment to bless us here in New York with an exclusive set at Soho House. But while the lucky cats in Sète, France are enjoying his annual Worldwide Festival, we thought we'd share some summer cheer of our own with news of Gilles' return to NYC and Cielo's FUNKTION-ONE soundsystem on Thursday, August 18th.
From his early days in the late 80's spinning at the Dingwalls sessions to his annual Worldwide Festival in the South of France starting in 2006, Gilles Peterson has established himself as a world renowned DJ who can seamlessly take you on a music journey through jazz, soul, Latin, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, house and dubstep without missing a beat. But first and foremost, Gilles is a respected music connoisseur and tastemaker; a radio show host on BBC Radio 1, a record label head responsible for signing acts such as Young Disciples and Incognito with Talkin' Loud in the past, and, more recently, with his Brownswood label.
Gilles Peterson has come a long way from his days as a pirate radio station deejay, but one thing has remained the same, his ability to recognize brilliance no matter what part of the world it comes from. With a solid focus on modern jazz and all its manifestations in club music, he has been associated with many artists of the 1990s (e.g. Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Bugz In The Attic, Zero 7). His radio show Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Show (available on Giant Step) has been a staple of the airwaves since 1998, hosted by BBC's Radio 1 and syndicated to radio stations all around Europe.
When all is said and done, whichever role Gilles is performing – DJ, broadcaster, producer, compiler, label boss or plain old record collector – the music is always the bottom line. His passion and enthusiasm is unfailing and deeply infectious, and it's the reason that his BBC iPlayer stats routinely nestle in the Top 5 BBC Radio 1 shows... that luminaries like Radiohead's Thom Yorke or Erykah Badu drop in to co-present special shows... and that his knowledge, opinion and playlists are universally respected.
