The first Sunday of the month, every month, 1930s-style Santa Monica supper club Angel's is transformed by multi-talented musician, DJ, remixer, composer and producer Mark de Clive-Lowe (MdCL) into a jazz club like no other he calls it CHURCH Live at Angel's. Over the last twelve months, MdCL's CHURCH has played host to surprise guests including jazz legends from both coasts across multiple generations, Grammy artists and much, much more. It's not unusual to see the likes of Louie Vega (Masters At Work) or soul legend Leon Ware sitting in the audience amongst LA's music lovers taking in the musical magic of MdCL's night.
MdCL sets the scene opening the night DJing some of his favorite jazz joints from iconic labels a la Blue Note to underground classics from Strata East to Black Jazz. With the iconic Josephine Baker backdrop over-looking the bandstand, MdCL moves from the turntables to the grand piano, joined by LA jazz stalwarts on bass and drums to kick off the live music. The first live set showcases the acoustic side of MdCL blending jazz standards, groove explorations and classic trio interplay. As the first set draws to a close, the guest DJ (monthly guests including the likes of KCRW's Aaron Byrd, Belgium's DJ Lefto and NYC's DJ Moni) takes over the soundtrack while the tables and chairs are cleared away ready for MdCL to flip the script with the second set a unique blend of live electronica, jazz improvisation, jam band and live remixing the jazz club colliding head to head with the dance floor.
MdCL has produced and remixed for artists as diverse as Shirley Horn, 4hero, Omar, DJ Spinna, Chico Hamilton, Nicholas Payton and Brazilian songbird Çeu. At CHURCH Live at Angel's he combines his producer prowess with his jazz musician upbringing uncanny juggling of new school electronic technology with the acoustic piano and guest musicians and vocalists. Armed with drum machines, effects pedals and synths, MdCL creates electro-organic soundscapes and beats from thin air while his surprise guests join him for a fully improvised music experience bridging genres and generations beyond imagination. Over the last year these guests have included Grammy artist Jody Watley, Sy Smith (The Foreign Exchange), Dwight Trible (Pharoah Sanders), Kamasi Washington, Leon Mobley (Michael Jackson), Chris 'Daddy' Dave (Erykah Badu/Maxwell), Greg Hutchinson (Joshua Redman) and more. You never know who is going to be getting on stage and every month provides a one-off musical journey for the dance floor and the mind that will never be repeated.
