AFRO FUNKE' Presents IZZY*WISE ft. MC RAI + EASY STAR ALL-STARS Listening Party
Thursday, September 6
Zanzibar, Santa Monica CA
This week the funk innovators at Afro Funke' present izzy*wise of Afrolicious & LoCura. Direct from San Francisco izzy*wise will be making his LA debut accompanied by MC Rai from Tunisia and Morgan Nilsen on clarinet. There will also be a listening party for the Easy Star All-Stars tribute to Michael Jackson's Thiller, aptly tiled Thrillah.
Easy Star All-Stars are almost ten years into a series of releases that began with an attempt to transform an entire album – Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon – into reggae. At the time, the band was one of the few artists who had ever tried covering or re-arranging a whole album, but in the nine years since Dub Side Of The Moon's release, this trend has become bigger and bigger. Since 2003, Easy Star All-Stars have tackled two more classic records Radiodread from Radiohead's OK Computer and Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band from The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's. So when they settled in to make their next tribute album, they kept circling back to one in particular: The Greatest Selling Album of All Time – Michael Jackson's Thriller.
The weekly club Afro Funké is the brainchild of African Afro Roots Reggae star, Rocky Dawuni, who realized LA's need for a night dedicated to African music, culture and art and it's far reaching legacy around the world. Dawuni, who's based in LA and his native Ghana, together with producer and photographer Cary Sullivan created Afro Funké, bringing on board resident DJ and partner Jeremy Sole's Musaics. Each week Afro Funké presents guest DJs, live performances, dancers, record release parties, fundraisers, art installations, crafts and more while Sole spins his unique Musaics, or sound collage-blends of hip hop, jazz/funk, dub reggae, afro beat, and remixed world beats; pieced together with tribal breaks, and uplifted by dubbed-out turntable manipulation and live instrumentation.
