Harlem Stage Presents Robert Glasper: Songs in the Key of Life

Thursday, December 13
The Harlem Stage Gatehouse, New York NY
event description

Pianist Robert Glasper, whose Grammy-nominated Black Radio raised his profile this year and took his cross-pollination experiments to proud new heights, closes Harlem Stage’s Fall Season on December 13th and 14th with Songs in the Key of Life, a star-studded tribute to the music of cultural icon Stevie Wonder. It is the third WaterWorks commission Harlem Stage is presenting as part of its 30th anniversary celebration.

Firmly planted in the worlds of jazz hip hop and R&B, Robert Glasper will bring together an all-star cast featuring the Robert Glasper Experiment (Derrick Hodge, Mark Colenburg and Casey Benjamin), Lalah Hathaway, Eric Roberson, Stokley (from Mint Condition), Questlove (Thurs. only) and many more, as they dedicate two intimate evenings to Stevie Wonder’s timeless body of music. Performances include new arrangements of Wonder’s music and the premiere of new Harlem Stage commissioned compositions by Glasper, inspired by Stevie Wonder.

Songs in the Key of Life will be “one of the coolest live shows,” says Glasper, whose debut appearance at Harlem Stage in 2010 was as part of a tribute honoring fusion trailblazer Roy Ayers, produced by Revive Music Group. “Stevie is one pop artist every jazz musician has to take seriously. He has a knack for turning complex songs into deceptively simple radio hits but we are going to dig deep into his nearly half-century-wide catalog. We’ll do really dope, amazing songs that folks probably didn’t hear widely, sprinkled with songs everybody knows.”

On Friday, December 14, a 6:30 pm pre-performance discussion with Robert Glasper will be moderated by Andre Torres, Editor-in-Chief of Wax Poetics.

Following its debut at Harlem Stage, “Songs in the Key of Life” will travel.
