Summerstage & Giant Step Present Shuggie Otis, Jose James and Hiatus Kaiyote
We are extremely excited about our annual Central Park Summerstage show on August 11th, as this event is always a highlight in Giant Step calendar. Past years we have had the pleasure of presenting Raphael Saadiq, Janelle Monae, Little Dragon, Femi Kuti, Q-Tip, Fitz & The Tantrums, Cinematic Orchestra, RAMP, El Michels Affair, Jamie Lidell & Gilles Peterson to name a few.
Giant Step President/CEO Maurice Bernstein shares his thoughts on this years SummerStage line up: "I feel we truly capture the essence of what Giant Step stands for with music and artists, also showing the breadth of our musical heritage with Shuggie Otis, Jose James and Hiatus Kaiyote.
Starting with Shuggie, I first heard of his music through the album "Inspiration Information"-in the late 1980's owning a copy of this album was like the holy grail. The perfect album, futuristic soul from a guy who pretty music disappeared after he was dropped by Epic in early 1970s. In 1995 when Giant Step Records had a deal with GRP/MCA, I actually managed to track Shuggie down. He was living with his father (the late great producer/band leader) Jonny Otis in Northern California. We spoke a few times and Shuggie even agreed to send some demos for me to listen to, unfortunately I couldn't get MCA to "green light"a deal. Fast forward to late 1990s, when our friends from Luaka Bop called to ask if we had ever heard of Shuggie and if we were interested to help market their re issue of "Inspiration Information" which included his other great album "Freedom Flight". Being a part of introducing that record to a bigger audience outside the heads was amazing, watching peoples reactions to discovering Shuggie and his incredible music.
Which brings us up to date with Shuggie Otis headlining our show and touring on the back of the latest re issue of "Inspiration Information" and "Wings Of Love" (previously unreleased music), we are honored to have him introduce his great music to yet another generation.
Jose James actually played for Giant Step on our Summerstage bill in 2008 with the then unknown Janelle Monae, Gilles Peterson, Little Jackie and Jamie Lidell. Giant Step and Jose have been working together for over 5 years, doing shows from NY to Boston and Miami to helping to market his music. It is a great pleasure to have him back but now as a Blue Note Records recording artist, internationally acclaimed singer and recently new father!
Rounding off the bill from Melbourne Australia, Hiatus Kaiyote - a year ago these guys were virtually unknown outside their country and now they are becoming a global phenomena a very fast pace. In March we presented their New York debut at Le Poisson Rouge selling out with no formal release. Now they are signed to Sony and they have a release this month. Led by the charismatic, Nai Palm, this is band not to be missed as they represent the next generation of innovative sound."
