Brazilian Girls with Man Man and The Phenomenal Handclap Band at Governors Island

    September 16th, 2009

On October 2nd, Brazilian Girls play the Beach at Governors Island, with Man Man and The Phenomenal Handclap Band. Over the course of two previous studio albums and countless all-nighters at their East Village clubhouse, Nublu, Brazilian Girls have established a reputation as New York's premier international party band. To attend a Brazilian Girls show—with its blur of beats, colors and textures—is to experience something like time travel: No one else is quite as capable of making a few hours fly by like a few minutes.

    Man Man
With Rabbit Habits, their Anti- Records debut, and the natural extension of their body of work begun with The Man In A Blue Turban With A Face and continued with Six Demon Bag, Man Man bring their incomparable vision to bear. Successfully capturing the raw spirit and essence of a Man Man live show, Rabbit Habits is the end product of the efforts of a band who are earnestly saying something important, even if you can't always make out the words over the blare of the sousaphone.

Urbanus, the new release by vibraphonist-composer Stefon Harris, signifies his 7th album as a band leader and his Concord Records debut. The new album picks up where 2004’s Evolution left off in that it features Blackout, his scintillating ensemble that’s as versed in modern jazz as it is with rhythms, melodies and soundscapes associated with R&B, pop, hip-hop and funk.

For this video, "Gone", they've organized a video remix contest: Contestants can download artwork, music and video to remix, then upload it to Stefon's YouTube group. Stefon Harris and Stacey Robinson, the original designer, will choose the winner.

Alex Cuba To Release Augua Del Pozo

    September 14th, 2009

Alex Cuba's new album Augua Del Pozo will be released September 22nd, featuring two additional unreleased tracks. For a guy who moved from smalltown Cuba to smalltown Canada, Alex Cuba thinks big. Cuban soul rocker Alex Cuba hails from Artemisa, Cuba (1 hour west of Havana) and resides in Smithers, B.C. (14 hours north of Vancouver). Musically, he lives everywhere in between. His sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks and rock chords subvert commonly held notions of what Cuban music is. He is a Juno-Award winner in Canada, recently topped the iTunes U.S. Latino charts has been touring the US for the last three years building a fan base and generating media recognition, one city at a time. With a heart as big as his retro ‘fro, Cuba takes it in stride and focuses on what he does best: crafting songs that cut through linguistic and cultural barriers like a machete through sugarcane.

Last Night’s Journey Party Benefits Kon

    September 11th, 2009

gse_multipart557361Last night, Giant Step's weekly party with DJ Spinna at Santos, Journey, was more than just a fantastic party with special guest DJs Rich Medina, Eli Escobar, Cosmo, Scratch and Amir on the decks.  It was a benefit for the great NY DJ and record digger, Kon, whose health has recently been bombarded with blood clots, on top of myriad more serious maladies requiring surgery.

A big thank you to everyone who came through to help Kon out.  Together, we raised $3,500 for him.  If you would like to make a separate donation, please paypal money to DJMSTHANG@GMAIL.COM.

From all of us at Giant Step: keep fighting Kon!

Finally, here are a few of Kon's mixes for you to enjoy:
