The Rhythm Roots Allstars vs. All-Stars
Released On: Jun 20, 2006
Released By: Scion A/V
Featured on this limited edition 12-inch are three stellar tracks encompassing the wide range of musical styles brought to life by the Rhythm Roots Allstars. "Calypso Music" is a mellow ride built around a tribal call-and-response chorus. This song features the multifaceted MC Aloe Blacc (of Emanon fame), who peppers the track with stinging wordplay highlighting the history and culture of Calypso music. Complex percussion, interesting change-ups, and thick beats make this track a truly innovative musical exploration. A testament to its quality, an advance copy of this song is in weekly rotation on Garth Trinidad's acclaimed radio program Chocolate City on KCRW. Picking up the tempo a bit, a cover of the Prince hit "I Would Die 4 U" brings an interesting blend of R&B and Afro-beat rhythms together with a big-band vibe, while the talented Raheem DeVaughn completes the picture with soulful singing and layered harmonies. Rounding out this release, Afrodisiac Sound System (whose members include prolific DJs Haul & Mason) present their remix of "J.J.D." The upbeat, driving funk of the original is reworked masterfully with the DJ and the dance-floor in mind. Executively produced by Scion A/V, this limited promo-only 12-inch showcases the outstanding talent of these musicians and demonstrates their limitless ability to get the people moving.
