e.s.t. (the Esbjorn Svensson Trio) is the threesome of Esbjörn Svensson (piano), Dan Berglund (double bass) and Magnus Öström (drums). The trio exploded onto the scene with From Gagarin's Point Of View, before coming to Earth with Strange Place For Snow and Seven Days Of Falling. Esbjörn Svensson provided food for the soul with Viaticum, lost himself in his Tuesday Wonderland, and the journey now comes to an unfortunate end with Leucocyte, the last album after Svensson's accidental death while scuba diving near Stockholm. The Swedish jazz pianist and composer was only 44. e.s.t.'s incredible musical journey began barely ten years ago, but they garnered several prestigious awards, graced the cover of several international magazine including Jazziz and Downbeat and mesmerized critics and fans along the way. To say Esbjörn Svensson will be missed is a massive understatement, but his legend lives on with the wonderful expressive music of e.s.t.
The name of the album Leucocyte comes from the literal definition- white blood cells, part of the human immune system that protects the body against foreign pathogens and infections. They must periodically renew themselves to continue their work and for e.s.t., spontaneous jam sessions were precisely their way to renew and rejuvenate. In between gigs the trio often rented studio rehearsal space for a couple of days during tours to jam without any pre-composed material. The musicians loved the freedom of improvising and the free exchange of idea in order to explore new musical regions, or as Esbjörn Svensson always formulated it, "to follow the music". By using this method they were able to fuse traditional jazz, funk and rock to create a tapestry of genres. The group has always blended an eclectic mix of classical, melodic jazz and electronics coupled with an energetic rock element; but Leucocyte shows e.s.t. taking it to the next level with their most daring, innovative and ground breaking performance. The recording was a the result of one of the aforementioned two day jams sessions that took place at the famed "Studios 301" in Sydney during the band's Australian tour in 2007.
Leucocyte pays tribute and carries on the memory of one of the most innovative jazz trios of our times. Capturing the incredible concert performances, Emarcy will also release the double live album, Live In Hamburg, simultaneously via online retailers everywhere.
