release description

Our Favorite Things is Backdrop's new series of most beloved music, freely and thoughtfully selected by notable genre-bending artists, in the spirit of legendary collections like Back To Mine and Late Night Tales. Nuspirit Helsinki, the groundbreaking Nordic Jazz production team whose 2002 self-titled debut album received worldwide critical acclaim, presents a collection of musical treasures on the first installment of Our Favorite Things.

In presenting their Favorite Things, Nuspirit Helsinki's main man Tuomas Kallio ingeniously crafts an accessible moody soundscape highlighting contemporary Scandinavian and northern European sounds that blend folk, pop, electronic, jazz and house capturing a range of emotions. The dynamic collection journeys through a colorful expanse of stirring melodic lullabies, penetrative atmospherics, elegant jazz requiems, hypnotic tech house, fluttering electronic beats and sinuous Afro-Latin grooves featuring tracks and remixes by Trentemøller, Jori Hulkkonen, Aisha Duo, Five Corners Quintet featuring Mark Murphy, Korpi Ensemble, CocoRosie, Wai Wan, Detektivbyrån, and Flügelschlag!

The album is available on disc and digitally in two versions, including a special continuous mix

The Backdrop imprint's first release was the critically-acclaimed Moods: You, The Night And The Music compilation, compiled by Craig Roseberry, aka DJ Shifty.

"The idea was to create a stylistically varied mix with a contemporary Scandinavian/Northern European vibe," explains Kallio. "Of course there's other stuff included as well, everything from new forms of folk / pop meet electronic, minimal tech and some hints of jazz."

"Overall, I wanted to the album to be very vibrant and musically diverse, which I think is really important in today's market. People have been looking for and responding to a much broader spectrum of music than in the past, from the young to the more mature. And while this isn't directed at mainstream audiences, I think it will definitely interest or intrigue the more artistically-minded or culturally 'tuned in' music lovers."

Our Favorite Things encompasses Kallio and NSH's trademark stylistic dexterity and sophisticated organic sound that infuse live instrumentation with refined electronic textures heavily informed by a wealth of jazz, funk, soul and Afro-Latin influences, as well as, hip hop, broken beat, two step, drum and bass, and house. This broad spectrum of musical influences and perspectives is vividly echoed throughout the compilation demonstrating why Nuspirit Helsinki has ascended to the forefront of the European electronic music receiving extensive support from taste-making DJs worldwide including Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova, Thievery Corporation, Norman Jay, Patrick Forge, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Dr. Bob Jones, and UFO, and glowing accolades from major publications such as Billboard, URB, MixMag, Genre and Penthouse.

Alongside his work with Nuspirit Helsinki, Tuomas has enjoyed worldwide success with The Five Corners Quintet, the celebrated Helsinki-based postmodern jazz outfit (and extension of the Nuspirit collective) influenced by early sixties straight ahead and Latin jazz.

Kallio is also the driving force behind Finland's successful and internationally-renowned Flow Festival which, since it's inception in 2000, has steadily become an influential and vital part of Helsinki and the Finnish Ministry of Education's city-wide music and mixed media arts festival boasting an impressive line-up of both Finnish and international innovators ranging from indie rock and soul to hip hop, jazz to electronic including Five Corners Quintet, Bebel Gilberto, Cut Copy, The Roots, CSS, Ane Brun, Carl Craig, Tiefschwarz, Timo Lassy, Jori Hulkkonen, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Gilles Peterson, Sebastien Tellier, ESG, Luomo, Jamie Lidell, Moodyman, and many more.
