Chocolate Genius Inc is one-man think-tank Marc Anthony Thompson. Born in Panama and raised in California, Thompson makes music that is rhythmically nomadic but grounded in the chaos of the universal urban experience. Black Yankee Rock finds Thompson working with the supreme mood manipulator Craig Street, a producer who brought artists like Norah Jones, Cassandra Wilson and Meshell Ndegeocello to new heights. Ndegeocello appears on a song and other collaborators include chanteuse Stephanie McKay, guitarist Marc Ribot and Van Dyke Parks.
Thompson enjoys this sort of musical cross-pollination and has worked with The Roots, Medeski Martin & Wood, Sweetback and Cibo Matto. In between sessions, Marc earns his keep scoring films, writing for artists like Lizz Wright or creating original tracks for movie soundtracks. But being an artist is where Thompson shines best as witnessed on Black Yankee Rock, an album that is hypnotic from end to end, offering seductive twilight music, electrified folk, detached jazz numbers and unquestionable beauty.
"Marc Anthony Thompson, the man behind the persona and the band, may be the most entertaining showman currently working the New York stage." — Ann Powers (New York Times)
"As a songwriter, Thompson pledges allegiance to his own moody doctrine, managing intimate confession and ironic distance all at once." — Jon Caramanica (Rolling Stone)
"Unlike many of his new-soul peers, Marc Anthony Thompson draws on the past without sounding slavishly retro...Echoes of Sly Stone, Marvin Gaye....and Chocolate Genius lives up to his billing." — Greg Kot (Blender)
