Staff Picks 2010

Every year, we ask our staff to compile their personal list of favorites, including music, films, books, events, and whatever else they feel like. This year we have a few albums that are nearly unanimous in the house: Janelle Monáe and Erykah Badu are pretty much untouchable, and other frequent winners in the music category include Blackmagic by Jose James, Body Talk by Robyn and Lost Where I Belong by Andreya Triana.

AOL Review: Aloe Blacc in Miami for Art Basel 2010

Check out AOL’s review of our Art Basel event this weekend: Aloe Blacc & The Grand Scheme closed 2010′s Miami Art Week with a powerful finale, performing the hit “I Need A Dollar” and stylized “partial covers” of all kinds of classics ranging from Al Green to Green Day.

“Since Blacc’s album Good Things released in September, he’s been compared over and over again to the likes of Marvin Gaye. Yet he remains humble and genuine in both his lyrics and his character. … His ability to mix honest social and political observations with feel good music is gaining him both respect and popularity as nostalgia from the early ’70s sets in.”

K’NAAN And Paper Tongues; Wave Your Flag Tour – 2010

Sometimes we like to pat ourselves on the back for spotting the talent train before it pulls into the station, and this is one of those moments. We have been working with K’NAAN since before Troubador exploded on the scene and “Waving Flag” put Somalia on the global map for being more than a war torn country. Paper Tongues delivered a fiery debut with Ride to California is ready to take on new challenges.

What with the 2 artists specializing in blurring the genre lines, and appealing to such a variety of fans, it was only natural that they would meet, greet, and make musical mash up babies together. They take their unique collaboration on the road on the K’naan Wave Your Flag Tour 2010; with special Guest Paper Tongues .
