New Release: Pretty Lights – ‘A Color Map of the Sun’ + Album Release Show Tonight in Brooklyn

Colorado-based electronic-music producer, Derek Vincent Smith, better known as Pretty Lights, just released a new album titled A Color Map of the Sun. Spanning genres from modern classical and jazz, to ’60s soul and beyond, all with his signature EDM touch, the LP is Pretty Lights’ first album to be offered for commercial sale, as opposed to just free download.

The work showcases 13 tracks comprised of sounds recorded on period instruments (rather than traditional sampling) featuring collaborations with artists such as drummer Adam Deitch, Soulive guitarist Eric Krasno, and Talib Kweli. Smith pressed every recorded minute of over 20 hours of live sessions from Brooklyn’s Studio G and New Orleans’ Piety Street Recording onto 50 full-length vinyl LPs, which he later, “sampled, reconstructed, flipped, and chopped” into A Color Map of the Sun.

Giant Step is presenting the official album release show at Brooklyn’s Output tonight, alongside label-mate Eliot Lipp. Advance tickets are sold out, but limited tickets are available at the door.

Check out a clip from the official making-of documentary on the album below.

NYC: Pretty Lights Album Release Show @ Output Club – July 2

Next week on July 2 we’ll be presenting Pretty Lights’ official album release show for A Color Map Of The Sun. The highly hailed electronic artist composed the entire record himself and brought his vision to life with session musicians in Brooklyn, New Orleans, and Denver. Watch ‘the making of’ video below to get a taste of the project and the process behind it.

Just as his music, Pretty Lights shows are carefully crafted with stunning lighting, stage design, and imagery that leaves audiences in a mesmerized murmur. So this little album release show thang? Kinda don’t want to miss it.
