New Track: Alicia Keys – “Brand New Me”

The new Alicia Keys single, “Brand New Me,” is co-written by none other than Scottish songwriting genius Emeli Sande. The inspiring ballad speaks on prioritizing one’s self and an unapologetic dedication to self discovery. Alicia talks about the song:

“Brand New Me” is about the journey it takes to get to a place where you are proud to be a new you. There is nothing wrong with growing! There may be people in your life that knew you for a long time and they think of you only as the person you used to be and not the person you now are! And this song is a conversation introducing them to the new you! Where nothing can hold you back and no one can hold you down!

Get ‘em, ladies! Alicia’s upcoming album, Girl On Fire will be out November 26.

Charismatic saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin recently released a video for her upcoming solo album, Retox. The funky soul tune is called “Jump And Shout” and features Lakedcia partying all around the city with her pals.

The young musician has played with Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, The Roots and Macy Gray, and is more than ready to leave her mark as a one woman powerhouse.

Playing composer, producer, and saxophonist on her new album, Lakecia is really showing her range with this project. “This album is really a fruition of years of songwriting as much as it is a showcase for my sax playing and horn arrangements,” she says.

Retox drops June 12.

Jay-Z Performs At Carnegie Hall

Last night Jay-Z performed the second of his two historic nights at New York’s Carnegie Hall benefiting the United Way of New York City and Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation. We were lucky enough to attend and witness the event – Backed by an orchestra conducted by Jeri Lynne Johnson (of Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra) and the Illadelphonics featuring Questlove and Bilal amongst others.

Jay-Z delivered classics such as “99 Problems,” “Hard Knock Life,” “Run This Town,” and “Empire State Of Mind” with the help of Alicia Keys, of course. Bilal gave us a special rendition of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” before Nas took the stage to join in before going into “If I Ruled The World,” There was also a beautiful rendition by the orchestra of Gil Scott Heron’s “New York Is Killing Me.”

The night was classic New York bringing together tuxedo NY set with hip hop heads, a couple of NY Giants players, Chris Rock (who was celebrating his birthday) and even John Mcenroe (to name a few).

One to tell the kids about for sure.

(Apologies for the poor photo quality – we got what we could get!)

Marsha Ambrosius – Late Nights & Early Mornings Out Today

Marsha Ambrosius‘ (of the classic soul duo Floetry) highly anticipated solo album Late Nights and Early Mornings was released today, featuring the hit single “Hope She Cheats On You (With A Basketball Player)” and another single currently climbing the charts, “Far Away.” The emotionally charged video for “Far Away,” conceptualized by Marsha and directed by her manager Julius Erving III, touches upon society’s current ills of bullying, gay bashing and suicide. By being honest and aware in her approach to creating timeless music, Late Nights & Early Mornings offers a candid glimpse of Marsha’s life and perspectives as she takes the reigns as the primary songwriter and producer of the album. Collaborations with musical peers Alicia Keys, Dre & Vidal (producers of “Say Yes”), Just Blaze and more add a raw and edgy vibe to the reflective and soulful album.
