Nick Ashford Passes at 70

Nick Ashford of songwriting duo Ashford & Simpson passed away last night in a New York City hospital. Him and his wife, Valerie Simpson, penned and produced hits for many of Motown’s largest acts. Nearly all of the ’60′s hits for Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell were the work of Ashford & Simpson, including “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing.” The couple was inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002.

Nick Ashford’s contribution to R&B and soul music won’t be forgotten. Take a listen below to his biggest solo hit with Simpson, “Solid.” After the jump, you’ll find a few more timeless tunes to reminisce to.
