Rest In Peace, Austin Peralta

Jazz pianist and Flying Lotus collaborator Austin Peralta has passed at the all too young age of twenty two. Flying Lotus announced the untimely death on his Twitter page this morning. Just last summer, we got to watch Austin rip with the Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Ensemble at the Harlem Stage and snap the above photo backstage.

Thankful for the refreshing talent’s contribution to music thus far and wish we could have seen what his promising future held.

In the below clip, Austin performs live in Tokyo. Read more on the LA Times website.

GPWW 8/17/11: Jazz Special, Words & Music with Austin Peralta + The Pyramids

This edition of the Worldwide show is an extra special one for genuine music lovers. It’s all about the “roots of music” as Gilles himself states, and it’s dedicated entirely to Jazz. The mix starts with a cut from the master himself, John Coltrane. Some other classic Jazz artists featured are Abbey Lincoln, Lee Morgan, and Wayne Shorter, among others. If this wasn’t enough, we are treated to other genres of music that were successful in blending Jazz elements to create something truly unique, the shining examples of this are some selections from Tribe Called Quest‘s heyday, and the house-jazz mashup “Hot Music” that still rings off in nightclubs to this day. Rounding things off, Gilles brings into his studio two guests currently touring around Europe, pianist/composer Austin Peralta, and Idris Ackamoor from The Pyramids.

For those of you in NYC, catch Gilles Peterson playing an exclusive DJ set at Cielo tonight!
