James Tillman & His Excellent Brazilian Infused Soul

Hailing from DC, residing in NYC, and having recorded his upcoming project in Brazil, New School vocal jazz student James Tillman is quickly proving himself to be a force.

Citing classic soul greats like Marvin Gaye and Bill Withers as influences, his sound also touches on modern talents like Jose James and Michael Kiwanuka, while still holding an irrefutable air of the tropical and tranquil Brazilian charm.

His debut EP, Shangri-La, is just around the corner with an April 29 release; lucky for you, we’ve been able to dig up three out of the four tracks for you to cozy up with.

Watch the video for “And Then” above and listen to “Shangri-LA” and “Love Within” below!

Winter Music Conference Refuels a Love for Music

Photos and words by Jen Diaz

The energy was undeniable at this year’s Winter Music Conference (WMC) as the streets of Miami flooded with tourists, fans and music lovers alike. You can feel the baselines thump and the loud cheers from Wynwood to Ocean Drive.

Once you get settled and decide on all of the events you want to attend, you begin to realize the choices are infinite and the excitement starts to kick in. At every corner you can immediately tell things are about to get live!

Leaving the cold wintry mix in New York is the best decision you can make, especially when you land to an announcement of clear skies at about 82 degrees. Once the thought of sunshine settles, the chaos of pool parties, day events and beach days comes next. My week was spent alongside two genuine and talented one-of-a-kind music appreciators Miami native, DJ Wasabi and Brooklyn native, DJ Spinna. Passionate discussions on vinyl, house music and the classics were in full swing.

Gregory Porter to Release ‘Be Good’

The now Grammy nominated Gregory Porter is becoming quite the force to be reckoned with. Undoubtedly talented and deserving of all the high praises sung of him, Porter is striking while the iron is hot and releasing a sophomore album claimed to outshine his Grammy nominated Water debut.

Be Good, set to release on February 14th, 2012, promises to display a range of moods and stories in Porter’s charming, almost conversational songwriting style. Firstly, folks can look forward to the title track, “Be Good (Lion’s Song),” which has actually been lauded as a crowd favorite during live shows for some time now.

With veteran producer and Be Good collaborator Brian Bacchus comparing the singer to Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield, and Donny Hathaway, we are beside ourselves anticipating what’s next. Be certain that we’ll be sharing what comes our way!

This guy is bananas. Sounding like a cross between Bill Withers and Terry Callier, Michael Kiwanuka will be opening up for Adele on her U.S. tour. The North London singer-songwriter of Ugandan heritage is a diamond, with vocals that warm your earbuds and subsequently send chills up and down your whole body.

Above is an acoustic video for “I’m Getting Ready,” which was released a couple weeks ago and it’s beautifully soothing. And below, you must absolutely check out the immaculately produced, richly sung instant classic “Tell Me A Tale” (we hear a little Marvin in there).

The I’m Getting Ready EP will be available September 18th. Yes, please.
