This Tuesday, NYC was on winter storm watch throughout the night, but that had no apparent effect on Plan B‘s New York debut at Bowery Ballroom. The place was packed and full of energy, with a crowd that was at least half British folks “on holiday.” Before Plan B, the crowd was treated to a beatboxing extravaganza from Faith SFX, complete with layered drum beats broken down, live instrument imitations and sing-a-longs to hip-hop classics, including DMX and Lil Wayne. He riled up the crowd for Plan B, who came out strong with a full backing band: two guitarists, back-up singers – the works.

Plan B played a mixed set including many tracks from his upcoming release The Defamation of Strickland Banks. First his soulful ballads had the crowd swaying, then he got into his more upbeat songs like “Prayin” and the crowd got jumpy; couldn’t get enough. Of course Plan B added a bit of flavor to his set, sprinkling in some classic covers, medleys, and switching to a reggae groove mid-song. Overall Plan B nailed it in our famously snobby city on a bitterly cold night. By the end of the show, there were nothing but warm smiles inside.

LA: Plan B is in the States for one more night, playing at Troubador (LA) with DJ Luke Top (Fools Gold) tonight. Hope you already got tickets, cuz it’s sold out.
