Throwback Thursday: Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli, Mama Zap at Giant Step SummerStage 2001

Erykah-Badu-Flyer

With the madness of the holidays behind us and Mother Nature giving us some weather related blues, we thought it would be a nice vacation for the soul to take this Throwback Thursday to revisit a particularly hot and humid summer night with Erykah Badu at Central Park.

There’s something special about summertime in New York. The city slows down and everyone’s a bit more carefree. It’s late in the season, and the long, sweltering days make us hesitant to venture from our little slice of heaven we’ve found in the closest air conditioning. It was a show not to be missed though, and everyone knew the promise of the night would be worth the heaviness in the air. It was August 6, 2001 and those that faced the above and underground temperatures made it to one of the city’s favorite escapes for the SummerStage concert series.

Yessir. Bobby Womack and Willis Earl Beal will be headlining our SummerStage show this year! Lock June 7 in your calendars, folks!

Above, watch the mini-documentary on Bobby’s process with recording The Bravest Man in the Universe, his first album of original material since 1994. Sit down with Bobby in the studio and hear what’s really good from the man himself. Look out for the album to drop just about a week after the show on June 12!

The once homeless Chicago native Willis Earl Beal taught himself how to make music during an overnight motel job in New Mexico. His debut album, Acousmatic Sorcery, is a result of this period of bare-essentials creativity, which consisted of “a cassette-based karaoke machine and a $20 microphone.” We are so excited to help introduce him to New York City! Definitely do take a looksee at his new video for “Monotony” after the jump.

There were trees, there was sun, there was music and gosh darn it was fun! Our annual party in the park is an NYC tradition that we all really look forward to and we want to thank all of you who came out this year to get down with us. Enjoy some photos from the Saturday, June 25th show, courtesy of Seher Sikandar, as we start plotting next year’s installment.

Just Announced: Our Annual SummerStage Show Line-up with Lee Fields And The Expressions, Fitz And The Tantrums, Andreya Triana & Rich Medina – Sat, 6/25

Every year Giant Step’s SummerStage party is hailed as one of the best summer events in New York, and every year we try to outdo ourselves searching far and wide for the best musicians we can find. This year we decided to go on the soul and funk tip with performances by Lee Fields And The Expressions, Fitz And The Tantrums, Andreya Triana (US debut), and a very special DJ set from our friend Rich Medina.

Doors to SummerStage open at 3:00pm, on Saturday, June 25th. Use the 72nd St. entrance to Central Park when you come out and bring the whole family because an event this special only happens once a year.
