New Release: Derrick Hodge – ‘Live Today’

derrick

The venerable Derrick Hodge today releases his debut Live Today album. Through the lens of a composer, Hodge blends together his experiences playing for artists in an array of genres (jazz, R&B, hip-hop, gospel, and classical). A labor of love, he had a hand in each track, whether co-writing or writing himself.

The album also shows the massively amazing company he keeps, with appearances from Common, Robert Glasper, Casey Benjamin, Chris Dave, James Poyser, Marcus Strickland, and Keyon Harrold, amongst others. Watch the album trailer below to learn more and hear firsthand from Derrick what the project is all about for him.

Robert Glasper to Release ‘Black Radio’ + Tracklisting

The ever astute genre bender Robert Glasper will be releasing his forthcoming album with his equally intoxicating band, the Robert Glasper Experiment. Called Black Radio, the project will release on February 28th and includes an all star list of features that frankly is making us feel a little faint.

Prepare yourself for an unparalleled mix of jazz, hip hop, R&B and rock, with appearances from Erykah Badu, Bilal, Lupe Fiasco, Lalah Hathaway, Shafiq Husayn (Sa-Ra), KING, Ledisi, Chrisette Michele, Mos Def, Musiq Soulchild, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Stokley Williams (Mint Condition).

Black Radio will be the first full-length album from the Grammy-nominated keyboardist’s dynamic band; saxophonist Casey Benjamin, bassist Derrick Hodge, and drummer Chris Dave have come together show after show and blown away thousands with their ridiculously wondrous performances and now to have something we can take home? We almost can’t take it.

New Track: Stimulus & Chris Dave – “Full Grown” (ft. Bilal & Renee Neufville) + MP3

3rd 1st Impression is about taking a “first” look again, but from a brand new light, away from a wider known persona.

This collaborative mixtape features drummer Chris ‘Daddy’ Dave on production and Stimulus, known to most as a DJ, as an emcee. Out as a free download on September 12th, the mixtape will feature guest spots from Bilal, Renee Neufville, Stokley (of Mint Condition), Casey Benjamin and Screechy Dan. And yes, mister Dave handles all the production and Stimulus is indeed on lead rappity rap duty.

The first single from the project, “Full Grown,” dropped last week and it’s pretty rad. Featuring Bilal and Renee Neufville on guest vocals, Chris Dave and Stimulus seem to have banged out a solid track like it was nothing. If this is the mixtape, we’re going to need to know what an album sounds like, please.

Robert Glasper Releases Double-Booked

One artist, two distinct but interwoven concepts: this is the captivating logic behind Double-Booked, pianist Robert Glasper‘s third album for Blue Note, following up Canvas (2005) and In My Element (2007). An artist who “unfailingly gets the feeling right” (New York Magazine), Glasper has made waves throughout the music world as leader of both the acoustic Robert Glasper Trio and the electric, hip-hop-oriented Robert Glasper Experiment. With Double-Booked, the 32-year-old Houston native puts his enviable versatility front and center, emphasizing these different hemispheres of his musical brain at the same time.
