Nikki Jean Live In Concert

Los Angeles based Nik West might be known to some, but will likely be a new treat for many. The vocalist and bassist delivers a welcome return to the funky, jazzy brand of neo-soul a la Jill Scott, N'dambi, and Ledisi. On her debut album, Just In the Nik of Time (released February), she takes care to avoid the highly programmed and electronic production of contemporary R&B, instead striving for a fuller sound with live instrumentation. Taken a listen for yourself in the live video above for "Forbidden Fruit" - homegirl gets down!
Woo! Best Buy rules for this. All summer long, they are hosting what they call "Live @ Best Buy," which is a live in-store series featuring talented local musicians. It was actually conceived by a store employee - pretty awesome. More awesome? It's free. This Friday, Best Buy is hosting one of their featured performances with Joe Claussell, a forward thinker and legendary soulful house music producer and DJ. You may have heard us talk about his recent release, Hammock House: Africa Caribe, which came out mid-May on Fania Records. Perhaps you even attended our record release event with him! 6pm at the Union Square Best Buy - this performance isn't one you'll want to miss.
Do you remember Loose Ends from back in the 80s? Me neither. However what with the 80s and 90s firmly becoming the latest wave of retro-chic in music (and everything else), a lot of the old goodies from that period are resurfacing now, like this British R&B trio that crossed the pond in the early 80s and became the very first British export to top the Billboard R&B charts.
Well folks they're back on the road and Giant Step, with our friends at The Shrine in Chicago, are excited to be showcasing them on Saturday, April 16th, backed by Verzatile and special guest DJ Mark Fulla Flava. Doors open at 8pm, and show starts at 9pm. In the meantime, check out these videos below to get you contemplating.
On his album Africa For Africa, released today, Femi Kuti articulates a raw and forceful call to the long tradition of Afrobeat. Recorded in the same studio where he produced his first recordings with his father Fela Kuti and his breakthrough solo album No Cause For Alarm?, Africa for Africa is in several ways a return to Femi's roots. Deliberately less-produced than its predecessor Day by Day, it aims to present Afrobeat in its roughest, purest form. Femi continues to develop his activist voice on the new album, with the lyrics addressing government oppression and other modern problems in Africa, but the music retains a visceral power.
