Winter Music Conference Refuels a Love for Music

Photos and words by Jen Diaz

The energy was undeniable at this year’s Winter Music Conference (WMC) as the streets of Miami flooded with tourists, fans and music lovers alike. You can feel the baselines thump and the loud cheers from Wynwood to Ocean Drive.

Once you get settled and decide on all of the events you want to attend, you begin to realize the choices are infinite and the excitement starts to kick in. At every corner you can immediately tell things are about to get live!

Leaving the cold wintry mix in New York is the best decision you can make, especially when you land to an announcement of clear skies at about 82 degrees. Once the thought of sunshine settles, the chaos of pool parties, day events and beach days comes next. My week was spent alongside two genuine and talented one-of-a-kind music appreciators Miami native, DJ Wasabi and Brooklyn native, DJ Spinna. Passionate discussions on vinyl, house music and the classics were in full swing.

This year is very special as we’ve extended our list makers to include Giant Step fam outside of the staff itself; many thanks to Maiya Norton, Nai Palm (Hiatus Kaiyote), Natasha Diggs, Rich Medina, and DJ Spinna for contributing their takes!

Amongst the most popular favorites were Disclosure‘s Settle, Rhye‘s Woman, James Blake‘s Overgrown, and Hiatus Kaiyote‘s Tawk Tomahawk. Dig into the complete lists and let us know your faves as well!

This week, we have another special edition of #Offline with “one party in two rooms!” As always, Q-Tip will be holding it down in the main room, spinning only the best, and keeping you on your toes. We also have some great special guests joining us that you won’t want to miss!

In the Panther Room, we have the pleasure of welcoming Peter Kruder (Kruder & Dorfmeister), Nickodemus (Turntables on the Hudson) and Wiseacre (theLIFT – LA, the303 – NYC). Rocking the main room and opening for Q-Tip will be the lovely Natasha Diggs of the Mobile Mondays crew.

Last week’s #Offline was one for the history books! We were thrilled to have the opportunity to pay homage to legendary musician, producer, guitarist, and songwriter Nile Rodgers as our guest of honor. It was truly unforgettable. To boot, we had the great DJ Spinna as our guest DJ and were graced with visits from Philip Bailey of Earth Wind and Fire, Afrika Baby Bam, and Michael K Williams.

Join us tomorrow at Output and help us continue a tradition in the making!
