There are a lot of great new releases today, but possibly the best one is Bilal's Airtight Revenge. Back after years of obstacles with record labels, his new album is a beautiful departure from the 'neo-soul' box which seemed to form around him before. The sound on Airtight's Revenge is still soul, and very new, but it's way out of any box we would have imagined.
If you don't believe that Bilal is magic, here are Questlove, Erykah Badu and Janelle Monáe to explain it to you, their official endorsements. After the jump, watch each of their respective videos by Plug Research and learn how Bilal helped shape the sound of these artists.
The story of "Window Seat" in Dallas picks up here; Erykah rolling with Rick Ross. Watch Part Two and wait for the story to be continued...
This week on Gilles Peterson World Wide, he focuses in on R&B/jazz/soul singer, Bilal, who is releasing Airtight's Revenge on September 14th on Plug Research. The special mix section of the show features a slew of Bilal tracks and an interview with the man himself, as well as some Giant Step favorites with Janelle Monáe, Erykah Badu, and Fela Kuti. Returning from last week are Monsters of Folk and Mount Kimbie.
