The famed Latin music label Fania Records will be showcasing its music during the 2012 Art Basel weeklong event in Miami. The Armada Fania Club & Pop-Up Store is a four night event slated for PAX Miami and will feature eight top DJs from Miami, Boston and NYC, who will be playing the original and remix sounds the label that is often referred to as the “Motown” of Latin music.

 

An alternative to the “laser & smoke” events held in the Miami at this time, the Armada Fania will bring together the best components of Latin music, “música para bailar,” combined with a Pop-Up store for attendees to buy Fania merchandise ranging from CDs to T-Shirts. In addition to the music, the Armada Fania will feature the LIVE art of Santiago, a New York based pin up/portrait artist.

Fania & Joaquin “Joe” Claussell Release Hammock House: Africa Caribe Today + Free MP3

Today marks the release date for Hammock House: Africa Caribe out on Fania Records. Produced and mixed by Joaquin “Joe” Claussell, it’s a stunning two-disc album with each track approached and assembled differently, each on its own terms. The first disc is a live continuous mix by Claussell, creating an epic journey that begins in the Motherland (Africa) and moves to New York. The second disc features nine classic Fania tunes from Lou Perez, Celia Cruz, Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barretto and more, all re-worked with the Joe Claussell touch.

Fania Records 1964-1980: The Original Sound Of Latin NY

Tomorrow, March 29th, Strut will release Fania Records 1964-1980: The Original Sound Of Latin New York. The double-disc compilation features a 32-page booklet with full Fania label history, memorabilia, album artwork and many previously unseen photos from the Fania archive. And for you collectors the vinyl is on the way soon with a double gatefold LP also from Strut.

Taken from Strut’s retrospective of the hugely influential Fania Records check out “Pa’ Bravo Yo” below . This is one of the biggest hits vocalist Justo Betancourt achieved on the label. An infectious cut lead by his deep vocals, the song first appeared on his 1972 album of the same name. See the tracklist after the jump.
