NYC: Electric Zoo – Sep 2-4 + GS Picks

Now in it’s third installment and rapidly growing, Electric Zoo will return to Randall’s Island Park on Labor Day weekend (Sep 2-4). Dubbed as “New York’s Electronic Music Festival,” More than 100 DJs and live acts will populate the festival grounds, including some of the biggest names in house, dubstep, electro, and dance music with Tiësto, David Guetta, Above & Beyond, MSTRKRFT, Moby, and Armin van Buuren. Be sure to grab your tickets before it sells out again this year!

We’d like to share a few of our picks, along with some not so obvious choices:

SBTRKT (Saturday, 12:15pm – Red Bull Riverside)
The UK artist who prefers to conceal his identity by wearing an African mask blends a palatable mix of house, electronic, dubstep, and garage while keeping a soulful undertone throughout. If you missed his shows at Glasslands and Moma PS1 in July, here is your chance to catch him.

Nicolas Jaar (Sunday, 6:45pm – Sunday School Grove)
Nicolas Jaar’s slow and mellow experimental songs rooted in organic techno keeps your head bumping. Performing with a full backing band, his live sets present an even more dynamic interpretation of his songs from his Space Is Only Noise release in the beginning of the year.

Tokimonsta (Sunday, 11am – Main Stage)
Born and raised in California, Tokimonsta’s (aka Jennifer Lee) sets are a breeze of trip-hop, ambient and dub combined with the occasional heavy bass and bits of every musical genre here and there. Mixing it all effortlessly she creates complex, textural soundscapes that are sure to capture and enamor the crowd.

Big Gigantic (Sunday, 2pm – Hilltop Arena)
Foremost energetic, the duo’s shows are proven to make the crowd dance and jump. It’s Hip-Hop’s marriage to a Jazz sax, electronica beats and heavy bass – elevating, loud and bright.

The Martinez Brothers (Friday, 12:30pm – Sunday School Grove)
What sets apart The Martinez Brothers? Maybe it’s their sense of flow, their limitless energy, or the fact this dynamic duo is notably younger than their peers. Chris and Stevie, backed by Dennis Ferrer and his Objektivity label, play house music its purest form. Fun to watch and even more fun to dance to!

2011 NYC Winter Jazzfest – January 7 & 8

January is most definitely not anyone’s ideal month for being out and about in the city. All we want is to stay indoors and drink mulled wine. Lucky for us we can do that AND enjoy lots of great music thanks to Boom Collective and their annual NYC Winter Jazzfest. It takes place over 2 nights, 1/7 and 1/8, at 5 West Village venues; (Le) Poisson Rouge, Kenny’s Castaway, The Bitter End, Zinc Bar and Sullivan Hall, all located within a few blocks of each other. Featuring more than 60 cutting-edge jazz and experimental artists, this is the kind of festival that will keep you somewhere warm for hours at a time. We haven’t been promised mulled wine, but we know we won’t miss our house much with these stellar line-ups.
