‘ETCetera,’ a new NYC party with Ge-Ology and Mark de Clive-Lowe

Etcetera MdCL N Geo

Words by Korby Benoit

Since my days as a child I’ve always embraced new friendships. As an adult I’m more keen of my innate need to connect with people and exchange ideas. Commonalities usually bring us all together, yet it is through our differences we can evolve and have a rich exchange of information and perspectives.

I enjoy discovering the musical tastes of my friends. And yes, at times I may develop a genuine connection with a  person who simply doesn’t appreciate the same music I do. In those instances all is not lost…or is it? (Remember, music is everything!)

If I’m just getting to know a person and they mention their appreciation for the sounds of Ge-Ology and Mark de Clive-Lowe, I’ll likely have an emotive response to this information. More specifically, an internal signal alerts me that I’m around my artistic kinfolk. We’ll probably enjoy the same events and we might offer each other chunks of musical perspective that we each yearn for, but have yet to discover.

Ge-ology and Mark de Clive-Lowe are both well versed in appealing to an audience through sound. I attended their first installment of ETCetera, a new quarterly event at The303 at Louie and Chan in New York’s Lower East Side.

Video: I Love Vinyl + 3rd Anniversary Party @ LPR – May 26

These kids are serious about their vinyl and this video counts all the hilarious, laborious ways. And it just makes the I Love Vinyl crew all that much adorabler – yes, we said adorabler. They better all be prepared for awkwardly long individual squeezes from us next time we cross paths. And we’re going to go ahead and guess that said path crossing is not too far away – watch yo’ back, pals! Or front? Side?

The highly praised and award-winning party is celebrating three years this Saturday at Le Poisson Rouge. And indeed, as always, this is a laptop free situation – it’s gonna be all vinyl, all night compliments of some of NYC’s finest DJs. The residents: Amir, Ge-Ology, The Twilite Tone, OP!, Scribe, and Jon Oliver. *Wipes up drool*

And for those that somehow haven’t yet been, this isn’t some post up against the wall joint – get ready to move something. Come with open ears and arms for “some soul, disco, dilla, boogie, hustle, hip-hop, old-school house, no wave, new jack swing, dancefloor jazz, bossa nova, salsa, funk, electro, and afrobeat.” We think they might be showing off a little.

José James Last Blackmagic Performance – December 3

Tomorrow, December 3rd, Giant Step Presents José James; plus TK Wonder & Ben Perowsky’s Moodswing Orchestra, and DJ GE-OLOGY in a very rare Brooklyn appearance at Littlefield. According to José James this is going to be the very last performance of the Blackmagic concert series. That’s right folks, the very last one! So make sure you grab your tickets in advance to avoid long lines at the door.

“This project is very close to my heart. It’s a tribute to not only the greats like Marvin Gaye and Leon Ware, but to our contemporary giants like Flying Lotus and Benga. I’ve toured Blackmagic in 30 countries this year and worked with an amazing group of artists and producers on the album – Gilles Peterson, Flying Lotus, Moodymann, Taylor McFerrin, DJ Mitsu the Beats, Richard Spaven, and many more. From Paris to Sao Paolo, people have showed us mad love! How fitting that the final show is in New York, the place where I got my first Lotus beat labeled “Blackmagic” and opened the door to making the record. This is going to be a night to remember.” – José James

A Bless-ed Private Viewing With Music By Dego, Ge-ology & Tyler Askew May 28th

robbi

Artists Robi Walters and Leanne Wright of Bless-ed are exhibiting two collections of work for a presentation entitled Superimposing The Thought Of Happiness at the Dapper Dan Imperial Gallery in NYC.

Robi and Leanne met in 1991 and spent the ensuing years working as a team designing album covers for some of London’s most talented and respected underground dance labels and music producers, including Gilles Peterson, Bebel Gilberto, Innerzone Orchestra (Carl Craig) and Dego (4 Hero). In 2004, they moved back to Leanne’s native Canada. Inspired by their surroundings, their two children and their absolute need to create, their art began to flourish.

Bess-ed’s works will be showing from Wednesday, May 27 – Saturday, May 31 from 12 – 5 PM. A special private viewing will be held on Thursday, May 28 from 7 – 11 PM with a musical selection by Dego, Ge-ology & Tyler Askew (Rude Movements).
