GPWW 7/27/2011: WorldWide Winners 2011 Pt. 2

“Is this the best year for electronic music since the birth of the computer?” A question Gilles Peterson poses to us in all seriousness at the opening of the show. Although he doesn’t verbally give us his own opinion on the question, the beats he goes on to play make a pretty good case in favor of a resounding “yes!” A barrage of standout electronic cuts from this year come in the form of “Far Nearer” by Jamie xx, “With U” by Holy Other, “Brush the Heat” by Little Dragon, and that’s just the beginning.

The episode is dedicated to “people who take risks” with their music as Gilles puts it. It is Part 2 of the Worldwide Winners of 2011, all in all he highlights 50 of the top tracks released this year. And speaking of winners, who’s been on more of a roll this year than SBTRKT, the mask-wearing DJ/Producer from London? His track “Hold On” included in this mix is definitely one of the best thus far. 2011 = #Winning!

GPWW 7/21/2011: Worldwide Festival Catchup and 2 Bears Worldwide Family Mixtape

Gilles Peterson continues to give us more goodness in this installment with music from artists like Jill Scott, Machinedrum, and the recently re-united Pyramids. For a good chunk of the show Gilles plays for us some of the highlights from his annual Worldwide Festival that took place last week in France. Particularly interesting is Jamie xx‘s mix, kicked off by his latest single “Far Nearer” that’s attracting a lot of international attention at the moment with its steel drum Calypso orchestration.

GPWW: 7/14/11: Fonce Mizell Tribute and Machinedrum Worldwide Family Mixtape

In this episode, the overall theme of Gilles Peterson’s WorldWide Show is minimalism. He opens the show with an eclectic track from London producer James Blake, proceeding on to play Dego‘s instrumental “The Monarch,” and then giving us a taste of Jill Scott‘s newest album with the neo soul number “Rolling Hills.”

Gilles also pays tribute to the great producer Fonce Mizell, who recently passed away. The tribute segment includes some of Mizell’s work with Bobbi Humphrey, Marvin Gaye, and Taste of Honey. For the weekly Worldwide Family Mixtape Gilles enlists multi-instrumentalist producer Machinedrum to bless us with a varied mix of tunes. Machinedrum is based out of Brooklyn and recently released an LP called Room(s) through indie electronic label Planet Mu.

GPWW: 7/6/11: David Rodigan In-Studio Clash and History of Reggae

Jamaica is the destination in this latest installment of Gilles Peterson World Wide. Gilles brings into his studio the legendary DJ David Rodigan, known for being an influential figure within the Reggae genre. Rodigan takes us on a musical journey through the history of Reggae, from its Rastafarian Ska roots, through to Bob Marley and The Wailers, the origin of Dubs, and even gives us his take on the impact that digital sounds had on Jamaica’s music in the mid 80s. Towards the end, Rodigan and Gilles clash – a form of competition that’s been around since the 1950s – by taking turns playing some classic reggae jams.
