Recap: Giant Step Curated Red Bull Sound Select Show ft. Thundercat, ASTR, & Tondrae Kemp @ LPR – Feb 19

Words by DJ Tara

This month’s Red Bull Sound Select, curated by Giant Step, was a journey across not only genres, but regions of the country.

Starting off the night was Tondrae Kemp, who brought some Louisiana funk and blues to the stage. The crowd quickly warmed to his soulful voice, lively band, and songs about love, heartbreak, and everything in between. He gripped the crowd with his version of the Isley Brothers‘ “Footsteps in the Dark (Parts 1&2)” which led nicely into an Ice Cube sing-along of “It Was a Good Day.” Hip hop wasn’t the only unique influence in Kemp’s set: there were hints of reggae and New Orleans Jazz throughout, making for a lively time.

DJ Jon Oliver of I Love Vinyl and East Village Radio kept the crowd buzzing between acts.

Join us this Friday as Church continues with internationally-renowned DJ, producer, remixer, composer, musician, and Tru Thoughts recording artist Mark de Clive-Lowe (MdCL).

This month, be prepared for sparks to fly as MdCL goes head-to-head with one of the deepest selectors on the planet, DJ Scribe. Due to illness, Cosmo Baker won’t be able to perform at CHURCH on October 5th. We all wish him a speedy recovery! In his place, DJ Scribe, the co-creator and co-purveyor of the legendary I Love Vinyl party, will be spinning dancefloor scorchers…on vinyl, of course!

Expect a special appearance by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on viola.

Video: I Love Vinyl + 3rd Anniversary Party @ LPR – May 26

These kids are serious about their vinyl and this video counts all the hilarious, laborious ways. And it just makes the I Love Vinyl crew all that much adorabler – yes, we said adorabler. They better all be prepared for awkwardly long individual squeezes from us next time we cross paths. And we’re going to go ahead and guess that said path crossing is not too far away – watch yo’ back, pals! Or front? Side?

The highly praised and award-winning party is celebrating three years this Saturday at Le Poisson Rouge. And indeed, as always, this is a laptop free situation – it’s gonna be all vinyl, all night compliments of some of NYC’s finest DJs. The residents: Amir, Ge-Ology, The Twilite Tone, OP!, Scribe, and Jon Oliver. *Wipes up drool*

And for those that somehow haven’t yet been, this isn’t some post up against the wall joint – get ready to move something. Come with open ears and arms for “some soul, disco, dilla, boogie, hustle, hip-hop, old-school house, no wave, new jack swing, dancefloor jazz, bossa nova, salsa, funk, electro, and afrobeat.” We think they might be showing off a little.

Kon and Amir Present Off Track Volume III: Brooklyn, Release Party + Giveaway Contest

Kon & Amir Present Off Track Volume III: Brooklyn, to be released next Tuesday (4/27) on BBE, finds the New York/Boston-based pair shining light on another diverse array of underexposed vinyl. The eclectic African disco and soul cuts Amir highlights on his disc are Americanized by style but inherently authentic in feel, demonstrating the very best of the region’s dance music from the period following Fela Kuti’s mid-70s creative peak.

Kon and Amir will be hosting the official NYC release party at Le Poisson Rouge this Saturday, May 24th as a part of their I Love Vinyl series. On the 1s and 2s for the evening will be Amir, Ge-Ology, The Twilite Tone, Scribe, OP!, and Jon Oliver. Arrive early and ready to dance; entry is free before 10:30pm.

To win a free copy of the album, enter the contest here.
