Jamie XX’s Solo Debut, “Far Nearer,” Out Today

Jamie XX from the famed band, The XX, released his first single today. “Beat For” sounds like a chopped up moonwalk, while “Far Nearer” goes from lullaby to tropical dance party – nothing boring there. Not too long ago, Jamie collaborated with the late Gil Scott Heron on a remix album for I’m New Here, entitled We’re New Here. It’s also rumored that the young chap will be featured on Drake’s new album.

Jamie XX & Gil Scott-Heron Video – “I’ll Take Care Of You”

Gil Scott-Heron‘s comeback continues, since Jamie XX remixed the full album I’m New Here to create We’re New Here. This video is for the second single off the remix album, layers of interpretation over the old standard, “I’ll Take Care of You.” The video, directed by Jamie James Medina and AG Rojas, tells the story of a young mother with a boxing career; seemingly exploring the question of ‘why we fight.’

Gil-Scott Heron & Chris Cunningham Video

Last night filmmaker Chris Cunningham debuted his work New York Is Killing Me at the MoMA, an audio-visual remix of Gil-Scott Heron‘s song; a “musique concrete” of “New York Is Killing Me” from the recent album I’m New Here. The above video is a single channel version, but for the event it was projected onto 3 screens with an extended version of the song. Cunningham replaced 90% of the original music with recordings of trains and environmental sounds, giving the song a darker cinematic vibe.

Gil Scott-Heron Video: “I’m New Here”

Check out Gil Scott-Heron’s video for the title track to his album, I’m New Here. It’s a deliberately simple take on a sparse acoustic song, capturing him live in the studio with subtle background projections of his Harlem neighborhood. Heron’s first album in more than a decade, I’m New Here is out now through XL Recordings.
