Happy birthday J Dilla! With the new launch of BLING47.com, Waajeed has been prepping audiences for many treats, including several of the Dilla variety. In the above video, Jeedo breaks down the background on a mysterious Welcome 2 Detroit track with no title and a simple annotation that reads “Featuring Phat Kat.” Enjoy!

Also, be sure to visit the new BLING47.com and sign up for the email newsletter to receive “a super rare [Dilla] gem that I can almost promise NO ONE else has.” Get on it, folks.

Video: J Dilla – “Last Donut of the Night”

Last Donut of the Night from Tuomas Vauhkonen on Vimeo.

In April, Stones Throw launched a video contest, which called fans to make a video of any song from Stones Throw’s catalog and upload it to their Vimeo group for consideration. A couple days a ago, Stones Throw chose to feature the first label-approved video from J Dilla’s anthemic album, Donuts, on their site. Directed by Tuomas Vauhkonen and Jeremias Nieminen, “Last Donut of the Night” is the selected backdrop for the video that views like a short film. Dare we say it’s kinda cute? Heads up that the Stones Throw Contest closes for submissions on July 1st.

GPWW 4/20/11: Worldwide Family Mixtape – Austin Peralta

This week’s show starts out with a track by the recently-deceased drummer Steve Reid, who Gilles Peterson started a foundation for on behalf of struggling musicians. The GPWW radio show moves quickly after that with some Roots, plus more great music by Morgan Zarate, Jack Soul, Riton and Hefner.

Then we get into the special mix from the latest Brainfeeder signing, a new LA-based pianist named Austin Peralta. He plays a nice variety of tunes alongside his own songs, including Bjork, John Coltrane, J Dilla, Archie Shepp and more. Gilles finishes off the show with more Coltrane (never enough ‘Trane) Sun-Ra, Bobby Hutcherson, Tortoise, Moloko and Arthur Russell.

Miguel Atwood-Ferguson played viola and wrote this arrangement of “Scrabble” specifically for the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. It’s a jazz song by Rene Costy, which inspired Dilla to create one of his best-loved tracks.

The enthusiastic crowd of music lovers that packed their way into the Echoplex for this special show and were not disappointed by the magic they witnessed. Exclusive music, top quality sound, and a stunning performance. Thanks to VTech Music and Mochilla for the video.
