Photo: Stevie Wonder at Outside Lands 2012

Giant Step contributor Emmanuel Blackwell shares some words on his Outside Lands experience, including photos from performances by Stevie Wonder and Santigold.

As cliché as it sounds, it has been a little over 72 hours and it still hasn’t quite set in that I was roughly 20 feet from the stage watching an American icon perform the songs that have helped mold the musical fabric of generations past, present and future.

Being at San Francisco’s Outside Lands is like being a kid in a candy store—for three whole days. There’s food, art, booze, and more distinguised musicians than you literally can even attempt to watch perform. On the final day of the prolific festival just a few of the names scheduled to hit the stage included: Franz Ferdinand, Skrillex, fun., City and Colour, Regina Spektor, Jack White, Santigold and the aforementioned living-legend Stevie Wonder to close out the show.

With thousands of people filling acres of The City’s historical Golden Gate Park with their ears and eyes wide open, Stevie delivered, dare I say, a Wonder-ful performance that left no attendee disappointed.

New Tracks: Black Milk & Jack White – “Brain” & “Royal Mega” + Live Album To Release

In April, Black Milk was invited to Jack White’s home studio via a personal phone call from The White Stripes rockstar himself. The incredible honor took the indie Detroit rapper and his bandmates to be part of a historic series of jam sessions with Jack White and a team of his musicians, which became White’s first venture into hip-hop.

What resulted is the single we have for you today: On the A-side, “Brain” and on the B-side, “Royal Mega” – streamable below. To Black Milk’s surprise, the Nashville-based legend deferred to Black in taking the production lead. A live album of entire jam session, titled Black Milk Live at Third Man Records, is also in the works.

From Black Milk himself: “The time we spent in Nashville collaborating with Jack White was one of the greatest moments in my music career. It not only inspired me to continue to work hard as a producer, but also confirmed that staying true to my art, without compromise, can manifest into the type of rewards that money can’t buy.” Read the full story on Black Milk’s website.
