Ambrose Akinmusire’s When The Heart Emerges Glistening Released Today

Ambrose Akinmusire‘s tour de force When the Heart Emerges Glistening drops today on Blue Note records. The 28 year old trumpeter-composer is bound to attract attention with his latest effort, a manifesto that is startlingly fresh and personal. Akinmusire himself composes 10 of the 12 songs on the album, with his labelmate and mentor Jason Moran picking up the production duties. The artist is backed by his young quintet (tenor saxophonist Walter Smith III, pianist Gerald Clayton, bassist Harish Raghavan, and drummer Justin Brown), a close-knit group of longtime friends and frequent collaborators that breathes a remarkable collective identity. Larry Coryell With The Wide Hive Players – “Return of Shirtless”

Guitar legend Larry Coryell joins forces with a group of impressive session musicians in this new funk jam, Larry Coryell With the Wide Hive Players, due to be released next week on April 12th. Dubbed “the Godfather of Fusion” by Downbeat Magazine, Larry Coryell has earned a permanent place in music history. He brought what amounted to a near alien sensibility to jazz-electric guitar playing in the 1960′s, a hard-edged, cutting tone that owed as much to blues, rock and even country as it did to earlier, smoother bop influences.

The Players consist of bassist Matt Montgomery (Calvin Keys and Variable Unit) and Thomas McCree (Lyrics Born’s drummer), horn players Mike Rinta (Sly Stone, Santana), Doug Rowan (Jazz Mafia) and pianist Adam Shulman, all contribute to create a cohesive alive sound, reminiscent of Coryell’s popular Offerings or Eleventh House era (1972-74). Primarily Jazz-Funk, the album also glows with overtones of soul, blues, has a definitive rock undercurrent. Check out the first single, “Return of Shirtless” -

2011 NYC Winter Jazzfest – January 7 & 8

January is most definitely not anyone’s ideal month for being out and about in the city. All we want is to stay indoors and drink mulled wine. Lucky for us we can do that AND enjoy lots of great music thanks to Boom Collective and their annual NYC Winter Jazzfest. It takes place over 2 nights, 1/7 and 1/8, at 5 West Village venues; (Le) Poisson Rouge, Kenny’s Castaway, The Bitter End, Zinc Bar and Sullivan Hall, all located within a few blocks of each other. Featuring more than 60 cutting-edge jazz and experimental artists, this is the kind of festival that will keep you somewhere warm for hours at a time. We haven’t been promised mulled wine, but we know we won’t miss our house much with these stellar line-ups.
