There is a new wave of jazz musicians taking over the scene with the kind of vitality, creativity and energy that only youth can bring to such an esteemed tradition. José James is among those musicians making waves across the world and he has been a favorite of ours since our Brownswood Sessions days. Giant Step is excited to be bringing José James for a special evening at Littlefield in Brooklyn, NY on Friday, December 3rd. Always taking on new challenges, José will be giving a Billy Strayhorn two-night tribute concert this weekend at the Lincoln Center under the direction of Wynton Marsalis that already has New York buzzing. Read what Time Out New York has to say about it here.
The Beast, a hip-hop quartet featuring emcee Pierce Freelon brings multi Grammy nominee jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon into the group for Freedom Suite, a collection of original songs, classic interpretations and interviews reflecting on jazz and hip-hop today. The entire album will be available for free download on October 26th, via The Revivalist, Okayplayer’s new jazz site.
The music of Freedom Suite combines a live jazz aesthetic with a electronic, sample-based hip-hop aesthetic and features artists like 9th Wonder, Geechi Suede of Camp Lo, Phonte, YahZarah. The music is interspersed with conversations between scholars and teachers like Amiri Baraka, Branford Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Angela Davis and more.

Happy Thursday, the day of the week in which we take 2 hours minimum to enjoy the classic Gilles Peterson World Wide radio show. This week Gilles is really flexing his jazz wax: nothing but vinyl, nothing but jazz with a slight lean towards Latin. These are choice selections from the famously diverse Brownswood vinyl collection, literally boasting titles from around the world. The show jumps around from known classics to rarities, but the tracklist includes artists such as Eddie Jefferson, (pictured above), Sonny Red, Grachan Moncur III, Sam Rivers, Earl Rodney, Sun Ra, Bob Dorough and more.

Clearly, we at Giant Step celebrate the World Wide show every Thursday, but BBE Records is about to celebrating the show’s 10 Year Anniversary by dropping a double-CD compilation album. It’s incredible that Gilles has been on the air (BBC1 Radio) for a decade now, consistently breaking new artists into the mainstream. Check out more info, streams, and a free download from the forthcoming release (in stores 10/11) here: Gilles Peterson Presents: Worldwide – A Celebration of His Syndicated Radio Show.
