Rest In Peace, Donald Byrd

Jazz great Donald Byrd has passed away. Another timeless contributor to music old and new is gone, but his legacy remains. Hear “Think Twice” above and “You and Music” after the jump.

Below, you can also view a clip of an AIDS/HIV documentary called Red Hot and Cool, which includes Donald Byrd performing with Guru’s Jazzamatazz. The performance is in fact from a Giant Step produced event at Supper Club in 1994.

Revive Da Live’s Tribute to G.U.R.U. & Jazzmatazz – 4/21

On April 21st at Le Poisson Rouge (NYC), to celebrate the life and legacy of G.U.R.U. and Jazzmatazz a year after his passing, Revive Music Group is putting together a monumental night of G.U.R.U. music. The show will consist of the bold arrangements of the 18-piece Revive Da Live Big Band, described in the Village Voice as “the city’s most electrifying young lions of jazz,” under the direction of pianist Marc Cary and trumpeter Igmar Thomas. The event will also include special guests, performers, raffles, and more fun.

The Beast (Pierce Freelon) has released this track as his own tribute to G.U.R.U. Grab your free download:

We are saddened by the news of Guru’s death, his career with Gangstarr and Jazzmatazz is an integral part of the legacy and history of Giant Step. “Jazz Thing” was one of the first records we ever played and it became an anthem of our fledgling movement. In ’93, Guru chose Giant Step to first debut his Jazzmatazz project and we had the pleasure of presenting many of Gangstarr’s early New York shows, with many more to come.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and loved ones, music has truly lost a pioneer.
