Femi Kuti to Release Africa for Africa + Tour Dates

In a career spanning over twenty years, Femi Kuti has been able to find his own voice while preserving the memory of his father, Fela Kuti. Following his 2008 album Day By Day and ushering in a more aggressive but pointed style of music, Africa for Africa will be released on March 22nd on Knitting Factory Records. Femi’s offerings on Africa for Africa show that although an heir in the family lineage of Fela, Femi is carving out his own space in the great history of Afrobeat and African Music.  Africa for Africa aims to present Afrobeat in its rough, purest form.  After the jump, get more info and check out Femi’s upcoming North American tour dates for April and May.

New Re-issues from Fela Kuti & Knitting Factory Records

Our friends at Knitting Factory Records and Fela.net have announced the second set of Fela Kuti reissues, Na Poi:

These 7 CDs, which include 14 albums released primarily in the mid-70s, contain some of the most powerful music of Fela’s career, representing Fela and Africa ‘70 in their prime. In this collection, Fela’s political and social commentary begins to reach a boiling point with songs such as “Alagbon Close”, “Icy Blindness”, and “Expensive Shit.” “Na Poi” was banned from the radio for explicit sexual references, and in “Yellow Fever” Fela urges people to shake loose the colonial mentality. Fela’s more poetic and metaphysical inclinations are also represented in this collection, with masterpieces such as “Water No Get Enemy.”

FELA KUTI
’SThe Best Of The Black President is released on Knitting Factory Records today. The impact of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s music in Africa – and worldwide – cannot be overstated. Hailing from Lagos, Nigeria, he was Africa’s musical genius, the creator of Afrobeat – a genre combining traditional African highlife, jazz, James Brown funk grooves and latin rhythms into a unique toxic mix that is wholly his own – and a revolutionary. Fela’s politically inflammatory songs laid bare the corruption, violence, and greed of the ruling regimes across the Continent and world. Arrested over a hundred times by the Nigerian government, ultimately 1000 soldiers invaded and destroyed the Kalakuta Republic – Fela’s living and performing compound that he shared with his 27 wives and his mother – sending nearly all of the inhabitants to the hospital, or worse. Despite the death of his own mother after the siege, Fela never stopped fighting the powers of imperialism, colonialism and racism with – as the legendary Fela Kuti put it – music as his weapon.

With deluxe editions of The Best Of The Black President comes a 40 minute DVD, narrated by Sahr Ngaujah, interviews with Carlos Moore & Bill T jones, recorded concert footage, and excerpts from various Fela Kuti documentaries, including Music Is The Weapon.

Knitting Factory Records Celebrates Fela Kuti with Deluxe Reissues

picture-21The forthcoming release of The Best of the Black President signifies the rebirth of Knitting Factory Records. Earlier this year, KFR licensed the 45-album Fela Kuti catalogue. Over the next 18 months, they will release remasters of all the Fela CDs in unique digi-packs with the original artwork, as well as certain releases on vinyl for the first time in North America.  KFR will also be giving the first official release to the entire Koola Lobitos catalogue- this was Fela’s highlife band which he fronted through the 60′s.

The Best of the Black President, to be released October 27th, compiles thirteen of the most popular Fela compositions, all fully remastered. It will be released in two forms, one as a deluxe version including a bonus DVD.

In addition to The Knitting Factory Records reissues, the first ever official Fela Kuti website has been launched (Fela.net), and a Broadway musical (Fela!) opens in November at Eugene O’Neil Theatre. Also keep your eyes peeled for Felabration events happening across the country and the world in mid-October, to celebrate the birthday of Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
