The folks at Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA) want to send you on a trip full of free gifts and culture. For the weekend of April 16th – 18th, you’ll be put up in the Doubletree Hilton with free tickets to local Philly events: Questlove with Keren Ann (4/17), the Rennie Harris Puremovement dance company (4/16) and free admission to the Free to Be exhibition at The African American Museum in Philadelphia (4/17), which looks at African American expatriate artists during early 20th Century Paris, including Paul Robeson, Marian Anderson, Henry Ossawa Tanner, and Josephine Baker.
African music site Afropop.org has started a monthly mixtape of their favorite tunes and this is the debut. “Afropop Worldwide March Mix” includes a track from the new Les Nubians album, “Veuillez Veiller Sur Vos Reves (J Period Remix) f. John Banzai.” Chill out with this mix, including music by Femi Kuti from his forthcoming album plus some great new Strut records.
Les Nubians are back with a new album, featuring “Veuillez Veiller Sur Vos Rêves” (Don’t Let Your Dreams Fall Asleep) and “Afrodance” (streaming below). The new album, Nü Revolution may be the most impressive representation of Les Nubians’ Afropean Soul to date. Featuring special guests ranging from African music legend Manu Dibango, whose “Soul Makossa” crossover classic gets a politically charged make-over, to indie soul icon Eric Roberson, with South African pop stars Freshly Ground, Ghanian-American MC Blitz The Ambassador and Polish MC John Banzaï along for the ride. Somehow, Les Nubians manage to make the blend of so many diverse elements seem logical and organic; it flows quite naturally from their multicultural lives.
Nü Revolution will be released on April 19th on Shanachie Entertainment.
To celebrate their third release, Nu Revolution — due this December, French / Cameroonian duo Les Nubians have embarked on a preview tour backed by a world class 9-piece band. The sisters wrap things up in their now hometown — New York City — at (Le) Poisson Rouge on Friday, October 15th.
In case you haven’t bought your tickets yet, Giant Step is offering you a chance to win two to see Les Nubians live at (Le) Poisson Rouge.
