Jessie J, the UK singer-songwriter who recently broke out in the US with her outrageous music video for “Do It Like A Dude,” has topped the BBC’s Sound of 2011 chart. The list highlights the very best up-and-coming artists of the new year, and is compiled from key music critics, broadcasters and bloggers. Until recently, Jessie has developed her art both on stage and behind the scenes, writing hits for megastars like Kylie Minogue and Miley Cyrus. But the music she writes for herself has more edge: ‘attitude-filled urban pop and big soulful ballads.’ Along with all that, she has an insane Aguilera-esque voice and a magnetic personality. Congratulations Jessie, we can’t wait to hear more! Check out the rest of the ‘Sound of 2011′ list here.

Artists in the top five in previous years have included Florence and the Machine and La Roux (Sound of 2009), Adele and Duffy (Sound of 2008), Mika and Klaxons (Sound of 2007), Bloc Party and Kaiser Chiefs (Sound of 2005), Keane and Franz Ferdinand (Sound of 2004) and 50 Cent and Dizzee Rascal (Sound of 2003).

Jessie’s debut album Who You Are will be released this Spring on Universal Republic. She is currently running a contest with Vevo, which will fly a lucky winner to NYC to see Jessie J perform live in the city – youtube.com/vevo.

Staff Picks 2010

Every year, we ask our staff to compile their personal list of favorites, including music, films, books, events, and whatever else they feel like. This year we have a few albums that are nearly unanimous in the house: Janelle Monáe and Erykah Badu are pretty much untouchable, and other frequent winners in the music category include Blackmagic by Jose James, Body Talk by Robyn and Lost Where I Belong by Andreya Triana.
