NYC: Gilles Peterson Live @ LPR – October 25

Another rotation around the sun must mean it’s time for our pal Gilles Peterson to make his return to NYC. Remember last year at Cielo? Yeah, it was basically crazy mindblowingly amazing is all – everyone and their mama was there and the music was without a doubt something to write home about.

October 25 it will all be going down once again, and this time at Le Poisson Rouge. The DJ, radio host, producer, label head, and lovely sound selector will be gracing us with nothing but the finest from what’s sure to be a variety of genres. Prepare to have your mind bent. And your body.

Interview: Pete Rock to Play @ Le Poisson Rouge, NYC – June 30

Yep. Pete Rock will be spinning at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC this Saturday, June 30 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Mecca And The Soul Brother.

We caught up with Pete this week for a few questions asking him to look back, share what’s coming up, and let us know what’s good for the big night!

More info on Saturday’s event, including ticket link.

Giant Step: Looking back, what’s your fondest memory from recording Mecca And The Soul Brother?

Pete Rock: Working with Heavy D doing “The Basement” song.

GS: If you had to pick today, what’s your favorite track on the album and why?

Pete Rock: “Reminisce” is my favorite track because it is my tears on wax.

GS: To you, who was Pete Rock then and who is Pete Rock today?

Pete Rock: Pete Rock then was a young, excited DJ and producer trying to reach my goals. Today I am a father, husband, and legend trying to keep hip hop alive.

GS: We know it’s going to be hotness regardless, but what can folks expect to hear at LPR on saturday?

Pete Rock: Everything!!! The music I grew up with that influenced me. A special mix of my favorite songs off of Mecca And The Soul Brother and the music that inspired that album.

GS: Looks like Petestrumentals II is brewing. What’s in store? What can you tell us about the Petestrumentals of 2001 versus this new one?

Pete Rock: Yes, Petestrumentals II is creatively in the works. There won’t a be a huge difference, just a continuation from the first album.

GS: What else is new with you? Any other gems being concocted in the lab?!

Pete Rock: Yes, lots of projects are being developed. First one out this year is the Camp Lo project titled 80 Blocks From Tiffany’s. Working on a DJ Premier vs. Pete Rock project that will come out in late 2013. Also collaborating with Roy Ayers and working with Robert Glasper.

Video: Ski Beatz – ‘Twilight’ Trailer + NYC Release Party

Megaproducer Ski Beatz will be releasing Twilight on February 14th and we are pretty much beside ourselves with this trailer. Woven along with the silky jazz sonics are visuals of Curren$y, Stalley, Smoke DZA, Mikey Rocks, Da$h, Tabi Bonney, and other guest collaborators. Really hoping he releases an instrumentals only version as well!

Also later this month, February 22nd, join Ski for his album release party in NYC!
