New Track: Bilal – “Too High” (Stevie Wonder Cover)

Um, yeah. Bilal covering Stevie Wonder? Lots more where this came from, please! This particular tune shares a smoothed out, jazzed up take on “Too High” and immediately moves listeners to a nostalgic happy place. The instrumentation is compliments of Yesterday’s New Quintet (Madlib), too!

The track is featured on Bilal’s upcoming mixtape, The Retrospection, presented by Vikter Duplaix. Absolutely cannot wait!

Video: Cut Chemist’s Vinyl Collection (Crate Diggers)

This is a pretty damn awesome interview with Cut Chemist, detailing the history behind his collection of 35,000+ records. Many of his records live in a converted horse stable in LA, where about 15,000 of the collection resides (many others are at his mama’s house, whom he apologizes to). His filing system is bananas and insanely impressive – the man is about his business.

The Chemist shares about his musical baby sitter and how his mother escorted him along his first record digging trip. And how it was like, so way uncool to have moms helping you dig, man.

Folks can also hear the story of “The Big Dig,” which was a Brazilian crate digging trip made by Cut Chemist, Madlib, Egon and Babu (Beat Junkies) and J. Rocc.

“We turned that country upside down. We changed the whole infrastructure of their economy just based on how many of us there were. It was like they brought in the army. Here comes the American DJs. It may have been the most amount of records I bought in one trip.”

Some really great moments in hip hop history all throughout this piece. Love love love it!

New Track: Freddie Gibbs & Madlib – “Shame” ft. BJ the Chicago Kid

The Freddie Gibbs and Madlib collaborative saga continues. A tiny departure from “Thuggin,” this tracks features upcoming R&B vocalist BJ the Chicago Kid on the crude yet loving yet painfully blunt rap ballad, “Shame.”

And indeed, the song most definitely a sweetly sung ode to the walk of shame. It doesn’t have to be so bad, does it? Not when BJ sings it, at least. And you know, Freddie loves you and ish. So, yeah. Stuff like that.

Sounding like some old soul, too. Theeeese guys. Hear more on their 6-track EP that dropped today, also called Shame.

Want even more gangsta Gibbs and the Beat Konducta? Look out for their album to come out later this year.

This one goes out to “all my Negroes and Latinos” says M.E.D. on “Blaxican,” his new track featuring production by none other than the venerable Madlib. The video is rich in its Cali landscape, depicting Black and Mexican locals amidst the colorful sing-songy mash of a Madlib beat coupled with M.E.D.’s smooth flow on the struggles of his ancestors.
